Lucifer: The Complete Series Blu Ray Review (Warner Bros.)

Lucifer is a 2016 television series co-written, executive produced, and created by Tom Kapinos (Californication, Dawson’s Creek, and White Famous). It was directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld franchise, Ballerina, Total Recall, and Live Free or Die Hard), Nathan Hope (Gotham), Eagle Egilsson (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), Louis Shaw Milito (CSI), Sherwin Shilati (Manifest), Karen Gaviola (The Boys), Claudia Yarmy (Resident Alien), Greg Beeman (Swamp Thing), Eriq La Salle (Law and Order), David Paymer (Grey’s Anatomy), D.B. Woodside (First.), and many others. It was ran and produced by Joe Henderson (11.22.63, White Collar, and Graceland) and Ildy Modrovich (Tulsa King, Necessary Roughness, CSI: Miami, Californication, and Eleventh Hour). It’s based on the Vertigo and DC comic book series from Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, Stardust, Dead Boy Detectives, The Sandman, and American Gods). It originally aired on Fox but it was cancelled. Netflix saved the TV show for the remainder of it!!!! Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (played by: Tom Ellis from Isn’t It Romantic, Buffalo Soldiers, Miranda, Tell Me Lies, CIA, and The Strain) abandoned his cherished throne. He retires to the city of Angels where he ends up teaming up with LAPD detective Chloe Decker (played by: Lauren German from Hostel: Part II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Divide, A Walk to Remember, and Chicago Fire) to take down some of the worst criminals around. Charming and devilishly charismatic, Lucifer has a way of manipulating people into confessing their deepest and darkest secrets. This helps Detective Decker deliver justice!!!! I originally slept on Lucifer, I didn’t check it out when it was first on. I’m a huge fan and I have the biggest crush on actress Aimee Garcia so she’s the reason why I gave it a shot finally. This television series has a similar vibe to Bones and Castle so it was better than I thought it would be. The scripts were so creative, fun, and entertaining each week on here. This duo is put into so many wild and awkward situations. Personally, I wasn’t really familiar with lead actor Tom Ellis before I started this but he’s very charismatic as Lucifer Morningstar. It took a little bit to get used to the idea of the classic Lucifer character having a British accent but it eventually grew on me. Ellis is able to manipulate and convince almost anyone so his special abilities really them out. He gives out favors and he always collects when it’s needed. The stunning Lauren German is great as Detective Chloe Decker. She’s looks like model but she’s just as tough as any cop in her unit. She never gives up, she’s very skilled at her job and she’s one of the last people that you want after you. It’s a complicated role, she is hard to crack and it takes awhile for her to actually open up. The chemistry between these two are so organic and it really elevates everything in Lucifer. The beautiful Aimee Garcia (Dexter, RoboCop, Trauma, Criminal Minds, and George Lopez) steals the show as the nerdy Ella Lopez. She’s the forensic expert and she helps put all of the clues together for their mysterious scenarios. She’s feisty, outspoken, and full of life. She’s almost always in a good mood and it puts others in the same mindset when they are near. D.B. Woodside (24, Romeo Must Die, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Suits) is underrated here as Amenadiel. He’s the brother of Lucifer and he’s often the voice of reason. He has a few different sides to him. At first, he just wants to bring his brother back but he gets adjusted to the human life and it all changes for him. He’s put through some serious obstacles during this. I’ll be real, it took a few seasons for me to like Kevin Alejandro (Arrow, True Blood, Fire Country, and Southland) as Detective Dan Espinoza. He was the rival and problem of Lucifer for a long time so they always butted heads. He probably had the best character development out of everyone. He ends up so likeable and goofy. Tom Welling (Smallville) really surprised me as Marcus Pierce. He goes completely against his typecasting which was awesome to see. Pierce was a huge mystery for a good amount of time in this. He showed sides of a villain and a good guy during some important moments so it was such an unpredictable role. Honorable mentions to Lesley-Ann Brandt (The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live), Rachael Harris (Suits), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), and Inbar Lavi (Prison Break) for their stand out performances as the bigger side characters in Lucifer. The rest of the supporting cast includes Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), Tom Sizemore (Heat), Dennis Haysbert (Heat), Rebecca De Mornay (Risky Business), Lochlyn Munro (Freddy vs. Jason), Scarlett Estevez (Daddy’s Home franchise), Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool franchise), Kevin Rankin (Breaking Bad), Rob Benedict (Supernatural), John Pankow (To Live and Die in L.A.), Tim DeKay (White Collar), Patrick Fabian (Better Call Saul), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), Jeremy Davies (Helter Skelter), AnnaLynne McCord (Excision), Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead), Jodi Lyn O’Keefe (Halloween H20), Christopher Marquette (Just Friends), John Glover (Gremlins 2: The New Batch), Robert Picardo (The Howling), Robin Givens (Boomerang), Jamie Kennedy (Scream franchise), Isiah Whitlock Jr. (The Wire), Charisma Carpenter (Angel), Lauren Holly (Dumb and Dumber), Mark Dacascos (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum), and many others. Lots of skilled character actors have cameos during Lucifer’s run. The main thing that annoyed about this TV show was that it jumped the shark all the time. It would have random silly episodes that had nothing with the actual show and it didn’t make much sense especially all of the random musical stuff. I hated those episodes, it took away from everything else. Besides that, it had a little bit of everything. It displayed comedy, romance, crime, buddy cop, drama, mystery, action, suspense, and some horror elements. It gave shine to all of it’s main people, various major subplots for each which is refreshing. It was just about 2 people like you might think. It focused on a group of individuals. They get very creative with the angel.and demon mythology updated to the modern world with Lucifer plus it’s based on the imaginative comic book franchise. Fox gave up pretty quickly with this universe only after 3 seasons. The backlash and demand was so high that it convinced the popular Netflix resurrect it for rest of it. It was definitely stronger for the first 4 because the last 2 seasons had all kinds of questionable stuff but it was still a blast to watch. Lucifer still gets it’s proper respect to this day and it has a massive fan base. I appreciate that it combined something familiar but made itself more unique at the same time. It’s worth checking out if you haven’t seen it yet, STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and list the special features from Warner Bros Pictures! These 1080p (1.78:1) transfers look amazing on all 93 sharp episodes. It’s the exact same restorations as the previous Warner Archive Collection Blu Ray sets put out originally on home video. It always had stylish cinematography to go with it’s comic book origins. It had high quality production design, beautiful locations, and impressive visual/special fx when it came to it’s interesting visuals. It has English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks on all 22 discs for this complete series set. Lucifer has plenty of action packed and chaotic situations that use it’s explosive audio to it’s max. The soundtrack and scores really added a punch to it also. All of the dialogue is crisp, the drama is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. Season 1 has a little over 2 minutes of “Deleted Scenes” which includes Lucifer, Stay. Good Devil, Manly Whatnots, Et Tu, Doctor?, A Priest Walks into a Bar, Pops, St. Lucifer, #TeamLucifer, and Take Me Back to Hell. It has 4 different “Character Profiles” for Amenadiel, Chloe Decker, Linda, and Dan that’s almost 5 minutes. It has a little over 13 minute “2015 Comic-Con Panel” which includes Joe Henderson, Len Wiseman, Ildy Modrovich and Jonathan Littman, Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Lesley-Ann Brandt, and D.B. Woodside. It has the almost 2 minute “Devilish Duo”. It has the under a minute “Lucifer Morningstar”. It has a little over 6 minute “Gag Reel”. Season 2 has the little over 27 minute “Comic-Con”. The panel includes Joe Henderson, Ildy Modrovich, Tom Ellis, Tricia Helfer, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aimee Garcia, and D.B. Woodside. It has the almost 15 minute “Reinventing Lucifer in the City of Angels”. It has a little over 4 minute “Gag Reel”. It has almost 9 minutes of 7 “Deleted Scenes” which includes Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer, Trip to Stabby Town, Quid Pro Ho, A Good Day to Die, Candy Morningstar, God Johnson, and The Good, the Bad, and the Crispy. It has the almost 15 minute “Off Script with Tom and Tom” that’s broken down into 3 segments. It has the little over 4 minute “Gag Reel”. It has almost 12 minutes of “Unaired Scenes”.
