Game Night 4K Review (Warner Bros.)

Game Night is a 2018 comedy directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Vacation, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Vacation Friends franchise, The Flash, In the Dark, and Hysteria!). It’s written by Mark Perez (Back Nine, Accepted, Herbie Fully Loaded, and The Country Bears). The budget was $37,000,000 and it grossed $117,768,230 worldwide at the box office. Max (played by: Jason Bateman from Ozark, Arrested Development, Juno, The Outsider, Horrible Bosses franchise, Smokin’ Aces, Office Christmas Party, and Teen Wolf Too) and Annie (played by: Rachel McAdams from Red Eye, Mean Girls, Doctor Strange franchise, True Detective, Aloha, Southpaw, Wedding Crashers, and Sherlock Holmes franchise) lead a group of friends that are all about their game nights every week. Max’s competitive brother Brooks (played by: Kyle Chandler from The Mayor of Kingstown, Friday Night Lights, Godzilla franchise, The Wolf of Wall Street, and King Kong) always tries to outdo him in everything. He sets up the ultimate role playing competition but it doesn’t go as planned. They find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when Brooks is actually kidnapped by legit dangerous gangsters lead by The Bulgarian (played by: Michael C. Hall from Dexter, Gamer, Six Feet Under, Paycheck, and Cold in July). It’s time to put their gaming skills to the test in this harsh reality. Can they win this one and save him from this disaster????Game Night is one of the more interesting and creative comedies in the last few years. It takes the popularity of role playing situations and game nights to a whole new level. The script was a blast and I really enjoyed all the movie references here. It has a good mix of dark humor, suspense, crime, and drama in Game Night. It’s loaded with all kinds of twists so it’s something that you need to fully pay attention to. Jason Bateman as Max is top notch in this. It’s the perfect type of role for the actor. He’s the guy who always feels like a failure to his successful brother. Rachel McAdams as Annie is fantastic here. She’s hilarious when they get deep into this game and can’t turn back. I love her Pulp Fiction scene and how uncomfortable she is with a weapon. The chemistry between Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams is great, these two really drive Game Night into something special. Kyle Chandler as Brooks is very different than his typical role. He almost always plays the good guy and hero in almost everything. He’s not what he seems like in Game Night, it’s a very complex character. You never know what he’s going to do next. The rest of the supporting cast includes Michael C. Hall, Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), Lamorne Morris (Fargo), Kylie Bunbury (Under the Dome), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Danny Huston (30 Days of Night), Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Jeffrey Wright (The Batman), Jaxson Ryker (WWE), Camille Chen (Renfield), and co-director John Francis Daley (Freaks and Geeks). Jesse Plemons is one of the real standouts when it comes to the supporting cast. He’s the awkward neighbor and cop that they try to avoid during game nights which ends up making stuff worse. Game Night is highly entertaining and it’s so much fun so the replay value is excellent. It has some brutal moments that will have you laughing out loud. Like I said above, it’s one of the more original comedies and it’s something that’s different when it comes to the genre. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Warner Bros Pictures! This 2160p (2.40:1) transfer with HDR10 is a major improvement from it’s previous home video release. The visuals really pop in 4K. There’s a few different audio options which includes English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English: Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks on the UHD. It has same audio as the other version but that one was still great. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the chaos is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. “An Unforgettable Evening: Making Game Night” is almost 4 minutes. It’s super quick but it’s really good for what it is. It’s a fast behind the scenes look into the comedy production. It has a hilarious almost 7 minute “Gag Reel” which is definitely worth checking out because it’s one of the better ones out there.
