Coven of the Black Cube Blu Ray Review (Blood Sick Productions)

Coven of the Black Cube is a 2024 witch horror film co-written, edited, produced, and directed by Brewce Longo (Vick and Tarstar’s Scarecrow Factory, Pumpkinman Lives, A Corpse for Christmas, Blood Sick Psychosis, Scream Queens Weenie Roast, Little Bo Creep, and Blood Bitch Baby). It was co-written by Zoe Angeli (Flesh Eater X) and Josh Schafer (The Severed Arm Re-Amputated). It was executive produced, shot, composed, and edited by Michael DiFrancesco (Vick and Tarstar’s Scarecrow Factory, A Corpse for Christmas, Little Bo Creep, and Busted Babies). It had estimated budget of $6,000. A mysterious coven which includes Clover (played by: Zoe Angeli from A Corpse for Christmas, Romantic Rendezvous, and U.V.F: Underground Video Films), Millie (played by: Ella Healy from Tips Up! and The Pointy Slippers) , and Luna (played by: Aja Long) helps pissed off wives with murdering their shady husbands with their brutal black magic. A deadbeat stoner Milo (played by: Josh Schafer from Pigshit, Frames of Fear, and Ouija Slumber Party) turns a pizzeria into a video rental headshop, a grieving Mother (played by: Tina Krause from The Profane Exhibit, Hunters, Bad Biology, Sorority Slaughter, Psycho Sisters, and Witchouse 3: Demon Fire) wants to connect with her deceased daughter, and a lost soul Vi (played by: Morrigan Thompson from Debbie Does Demons, Crackcoon, Killer Campout: Part II, XXX-mas, Air Fryer Slaughter, and Friday the 13th: The Awakening) falls in love with a real life monster hidden in plain sight after a bad breakup with her girlfriend Gumby (played by: Kasper Meltedhair from Darbie’s Scream House, Scream Queens Weenie Roast, Cannibal Hookers, and Hooker with a Hacksaw) in this dark romance cursed by the deadly occult!!!! Coven of the Black Cube feels like a late 80’s shot on video horror feature and that’s really cool considering it was made in the modern day. It’s a definitely a unique entry for the witch sub-genre. Women have their cheating partners murdered with the assistance of this secret coven. Some females get caught in the crossfire here so these evil women are equal opportunity to killers. It was directed by low budget producer Brewce Longo who have been involved with several projects from exploitation legends like Donald Farmer and Joel D. Wynkoop over the years. Coven of the Black Cube doesn’t really stick to it’s script, it’s not afraid of a plot hole or doing something random as hell that totally switches it up. Scream Queen Morrigan Thompson finally gets one of her bigger roles as Vi in this. Usually, she’s more of a supporting character but she fully embraces the lead in this low budget drama mixed with some crazy horror elements. I’ve always liked her, she was one of the main reasons that I wanted to review Coven of the Black Cube. This is the best performances from her so far. Vi goes through hell and she has to be put into many different situations. SOV Horror legend Tina Krause has a smaller role as a mother dealing with her daughter being gone. She’s the perfect actress for this type of film and it’s awesome to see her still appreciated after all these years. She gives a strong turn, it’s a different type of role for the veteran and she pulls it off with ease. Newcomer Zoe Angeli shows up as the unpredictable Clover. I’m not familiar with her but she made a good first impression as the witch that just wants to help her community. Her influence is all over the place. The rest of the supporting cast includes Kasper Meltedhair, Josh Schafer, Ella Healy, Annie Mitchell (A Corpse for Christmas), Chris Seaver (Mulva franchise), Joe Swanberg (You’re Next), David “The Rock” Nelson (Groundhog Day), Unholy Altar, Acid Witch, Sing Slavic, Andrew Baltes (Bonehill Road), Josh Christensen (ABCs of Death 2.5), Meredith Host (Death O’Lantern franchise), Rich Klauf (Blood Sick Psychosis), and Brewce Longo (Busted Babies). The acting is mainly over the top and it has that live action cartoon approach but it works for Coven of the Black Cube. The pace and flow is a little inconsistent and it does drag every once in awhile. I think it’s around 15 top long because some of the more serious scenes wear out it’s welcome and it would have been much better edited down. Coven of the Black Cube is more of a character study and dark drama for the most part rather than a straight up horror feature. Most of the violence early on is actually off screen or not really displayed much. It does get more extreme for it’s last 15 minutes. There’s some graphic gore and torture during it. Coven of the Black Cube provides equal opportunity nudity for both male and female. It doesn’t hold back on the sleaze, it shows full frontal which is rarely done in cinema at this point so I respect that they pushed it all the way. There’s some excellent eye candy with steamy uncensored sexual scenes that includes lead actress Morrigan Thompson with both Kasper Meltedhair and Zoe Angeli. It has several nods and easter eggs for old school horror in the background which is nice. It requires a little more patience than usual but it’s worth the wait when it finally self destructs for everyone involved in this nightmare!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Blood Sick Productions in association with MVD Entertainment Group! This 1080 (1.33:1) unedited and uncut transfer was made in the creative grind house style with the visual look of shot on video horror from back in the day. It almost feels like a random homemade VHS tape that you found by accident so it adds to it’s atmosphere. It has an English: 2.0 Stereo track on the disc. This isn’t action packed or suspense filled so the audio is pretty standard here. The rock soundtrack stands out the most when it comes to this department. All of the dialogue is clean, the mystery is elevated, and the music has a big boost to it. It has English subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with Brewce Longo, Zoe Angeli, Michael DiFrancesco, and Josh Schafer. They chat about the development and how It was inspired by true crimes. They joke about killing most of their previous villains in the opening. They mention several people shot shorts that they included in here. They point out all of the cameos. They have a great time revisiting this independent production. It’s mainly a scene by scene type of track with lots of information and stories from it. It has the little over 19 minute “Behind the Scenes”. There’s various BTS footage from the low budget shoot here. It has almost 19 minutes of “Outtakes”. It has 6 different “Trailers” from Blood Sick Productions. Including Coven of the Black Cube. It’s available everywhere right now including the MVDShop.com, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
