She Shoots Straight (aKa 皇家女將, Wong ga lui Cheung, Huáng jiā nǚ jiāng, and Lethal Lady) is a 1990 crime revenge film co-written and directed by Corey Yuen (The Transporter, DOA: Dead or Alive, No Retreat No Surrender franchise, Women on the Run, Dragons Forever, Hero, and The Legend). It was co-written by Kai-Chi Yuen (The Seventh Curse, Once Upon a Time in China, A Chinese Ghost Story, Drunken Master II, and The Raid) and Barry Wong (Hard Boiled, Twin Dragons, Pedicab Driver, Mr. Vampire franchise, Family Honor, Armour of God, and Double Trouble). It was produced by Sammo Kam-Bo Hung (The Island, Hocus Pocus, Scared Stiff, The Final Test, Lady Reporter, Operation Scorpio, Into the Fire, Long Arm of the Law, and Licence to Steal). Inspector Mina Kao (played by: Joyce Godenzi from Mr. Nice Guy, The Ghost Snatchers, Licence to Steal, The Raid, The Seventh Curse, and Spooky, Spooky) is a career-focused officer who has just married her supervisor Inspector Huang Tsung-Pao (played by: Tony Leung from Prison on Fire, A Better Tomorrow III, Gunmen, Three… Extremes, Election, and Finale in Blood), who himself comes from a family of dedicated police officers. Her new sisters-in-law Huang Chia-Ling (played by: Carina Lau from Ashes of Time, Infernal Affairs franchise, Detective Dee franchise, Let the Bullets Fly, Lady Supercop, and Project A 2) and Huang Chia-Yu (played by: Sandra Ng from Peking Opera Blues, Scared Stiff, In the Line of Duty III, Vampire vs. Vampire, Ghost Busting, Here Comes a Vampire, and Ghostly Vixen) are a little jealous that she outranks them.but when a gang of violent Vietnamese criminals lead by Nguyen Hwa (played by: Wah Yuen from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Iceman Cometh, Mr. Vampire, Police Story 3: Supercop, On the Run, Dragons Forever, and Kung Fu Hustle) target the family, the sisters unite into a lethal force of vengeance!!!! She Shoots Straight brings the audience back to 90’s Asian crime and revenge. Veteran actor Corey Yuen is behind the camera for this wild ride. He provides plenty of action, violence, suspense, and drama for this. The script is well written, it focuses on a legendary police family and Mina Kao feels a little out of place at joining it in marriage. Joyce Godenzi builds her character as the underappreciated Mina Kao. She starts out as someone trying to find her place in the world. She’s pregnant and married but she’s still the law. She feels outdone by her new respected police family that she joined. As tragedy strikes, she’s forced to take matters in her own hands. Veterans Carina Lau as Chia-Ling and Sandra Ng as Chia-Yu are the spiteful sisters-in-law that originally don’t really like their new member of their group. They push her to her limits and they don’t seem to respect her at first. When the chaos hits, they learn who she really is. The skilled Tony Leung as Tsung-Pao is the superstar with all kinds of potential. He’s sorta pushed as the main character before everything goes down so they take a Psycho approach which you don’t expect. The underrated Wah Yuen is the main villain Nguyen Hwa. He’s typically a stuntman and he’s been used as a background bad guy in so much stuff so it’s great to see him get the opportunity to shine as the brutal gangster with absolutely no morals. Lots of familiar faces in this. The supporting cast includes Sammo Hung (Project A franchise), Pik-Wan Tang (The Seasons), Agnes Aurelio (Licence to Steal), Chi-Wing Lau (Police Story), Anglie Leung (Police Story 2), Lai-Yui Lee (School on Fire), Corey Yuen (Eastern Condors), Michael Dingo (Tiger Cage III), Bruce Fontaine (The King of the Kickboxers), Tak-Kwong Chan (Long Arm of the Law franchise), Wing-Cho Yip (The Killer), Siu Tak-Foo (On the Run), Fat Chung (Crime Story), Jeffrey Falcon (Six-String Samurai), Amy Yip (Erotic Ghost Story), Dion Lam (Black Mask), and Helena Law (The Untold Story 2). She Shoots Straight is extremely tense and thrilling, pure adrenaline rush. It doesn’t back away from it’s vicious gun play action and relentless brutality. The drama is highlighted by it’s family issues and dealing with a major change in their lives. The simple concept really works for She Shoots Straight. The heist scenario and uncover collision is what really sets everything off. The fight choreography is excellent especially for it’s finish. I missed this one back in the day so I really appreciate 88 Films resurrecting it on home video after all these years. This very entertaining and it manages to keep your attention the entire time. This 1080p (1.85:1) unrated transfer is from a brand new 2K restoration from the original camera negative. She Shoots Straight looks way better than expected. The visuals are sharper in every possible way. It has a few different audio options which includes Cantonese: LPCM 2.0 Mono, Cantonese: LPCM 2.0, English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 , and English: LPCM 2.0 Mono tracks on the disc. She Shoots Straight is action packed, bullets flying, intense fighting, and plenty of violence so the audio really shines for this one. All of the dialogue is crisp, the thrills are elevated, and the music has nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with expert Frank Djeng. This was heavily influenced by the television series The Seasons. He is always informative and he shares a variety of stories mixed with facts. It has background and production details that most people don’t know about. If you ever wanted to know more about She Shoots Straight, it’s all here. This is a nice companion piece for future viewings. It has an almost 16 minute “Straight to the Heart”. It’s an interview with scriptwriter Yuen Kai-Chi. He chats about getting the gig for this after another writer couldn’t do it. He brings up being very familiar with the cast so he knew how to put together the perfect dialogue for them. He ended up making more for his work after being recognized for previous successful projects. It’s a detailed and honest conversation about his career and working on this 90’s action feature. It’s subtitled in English. It has a little over 2 minutes of “Alternate English Credits”. It has a little over 2 minutes “Image Gallery”.
