Satan Hates You Blu Ray Review (Glass Eye Pix)
Satan Hates You is a 2010 horror film written, edited, produced, and directed by James Felix McKenney (Automatons, CanniBallistic!, Hypothermia, Wrack, and Villain). It was produced by Larry Fessenden (Blackout, The Innkeepers, Sisters, Automations, The Roost, Trigger Man, I Can See You, and The Viewer). Homicidal maniac Marc (played by: Don Wood from Automatons, CanniBallistic!, Hypothermia, and The Off Season) is constantly driven by demons buried deep within his soul while party girl Wendy (played by: Christine Spencer from Automatons, Absolute Trust, A Sweet Kind of Hollow, and A Box Came to Brooklyn) lives life fast and hard without a second thought to the consequences. Their separate paths will eventually cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to hell????
Satan Hates You reminds me a little of a Troma production. This independent feature is over the top and very silly at times but it works for it’s unpredictable atmosphere. James Felix McKenney handles a variety of different jobs here including behind the camera. Lead actor Don Wood is solid as schizophrenic Marc. He’s like Jekyll and Hyde, the audience never knows which personality is going to show up next. He punishes people for their sins. Christine Spencer as Wendy is the financially stable barfly. She’s always there but she has a great job so she just wants to have some fun after leaving there. She finally gets the nerve to have a real concussion with Marc. She’s hoping to turn it into something. The legendary Reggie Bannister (Phantasm franchise, Wishmaster, Silent Night Deadly Night 4, The Mangler Reborn, and Bubba Ho-Tep) steals the show as the reliable bartender Mickey. He always has something sharp to say and he knows what his customers want before they even ask. He doesn’t take shit from anyone and he challenges people who do wrong in his place of business. Horror Icon Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes franchise, The Devil’s Rejects, Weird Science, Deadly Blessing, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) as Mr. Harker is hilarious as the owner of the motel. He used to dealing with weird occupants. He has his own suspicions and witty remarks about his visitors. The talented Angus Scrimm (Phantasm franchise, John Dies at the End, Wishmaster, I Sell the Dead, Automatons, Subspecies, and Chopping Mall) as Dr. Michael Gabriel plays the charismatic televangelist that convinces his viewers to believe. He’s a commanding force that hypnotizes the public with his powerful words. It’s a very different role for the classic horror villain but he’s great in this.
Scream Queen Debbie Rochon (Tromeo and Juliet, Terror Firmer, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, Mulva franchise, and Hanger) is the born again Tina. She’s a former party girl that changed her wild life. She wants to help the troubled Marc but he’s not interested. This is a newer type of character for the actress, she really flexes her skills here I’m almost chameleon like performance because you almost forget that it’s her while experiencing the brave portrayal. Character actor Larry Fessenden (Imaginary Heroes, Animal Factory, Session 9, You’re Next, We Are Still Here, Jakob’s Wife, and Cabin Fever 2) as Glumac is the minion of the devil. He’s on earth to find his next guests for hell. He brings the comedy relief to this darker subject. He’s not afraid to chew the scenery in Satan Hates You. The rest of the supporting cast includes Bradford Scobie (Turtles Forever), Christina Campanella (The Addiction), Turquoise Taylor Grant (CanniBallistic!), Monique Dupree (Post Mortem, America 2021), Matt Huffman (Automatons), Ruth Kulerman (Third Watch), Jennifer Boutell (Automatons), Amy Chang (Law and Order: Organized Crime), Brenda Cooney (The Innkeepers), Francine Pado (The Off Season), John Levene (Automatons), Max Brooks (Batman Beyond), Alan Rowe Kelly (Skinned Alive), Daniel Mazikowski (Trigger Man), Graham Reznick (The Roost), Benjamin Forster (Automatons), Michael Vincent (Automatons), Pauley Perrette (NCIS), and Sean Reid (The Sacrament). The best thing about Satan Hates You is the impressive group of actors involved with it. It’s loaded with familiar faces for being such a smaller movie. It’s an interesting take on the religious horror sub-genre. Apparently, everyone in town only has this Christian inspired channel that preaches to the public, it shows up in various locations. It doesn’t really focus on it for awhile but it’s extremely important once everything develops. It’s fully independent with this concept and execution, I don’t think any mainstream would push for something like this. It has a grindhouse vibe to it. Satan Hates You is definitely not for everyone and it will most likely offend a good amount of a certain group but it tries to be it’s own type of universe which I respect. It was a nice surprise, RECOMMENDED!!!!
