Longlegs Blu Ray Review (Decal Releasing)

Longlegs is a 2024 horror film written and directed by Oz Perkins (Gretel and Hansel, The Monkey, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, The Twilight Zone, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter). It was produced by Jason Cloth (Child’s Play, Capone, The Mule, Assassination Nation, Monkey Man, The Man from Toronto, The Green Knight, Candyman, Bombshell, The Kitchen, and Joker) and 24 others. It grossed $108,880,830 worldwide at the box office. Gifted FBI Agent Lee Harker (played by: Maika Monroe from It Follows, The Guest, The Stranger, God Is a Bullet, Villains, Honey Boy, Independence Day: Resurgence, and The 5th Wave) is a fresh recruit that’s given the complicated task of the unsolved case of the mysterious serial killer Longlegs (played by: Nicolas Cage from Grand Isle, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Kick-Ass, The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off, Wild at Heart, Ghostrider 1/2, 8MM, Willy’s Wonderland, Vengeance: A Love Story, Renfield, Butcher’s Crossing, Bringing out the Dead, and The Cotton Club). When she digs deeper with the case, she finds a personal connection with the psychopath that’s she’s been tracking down. The supernatural and the occult elements continue to make this situation even harder to figure out. She must find a way to stop this lunatic before he murders again. Will she be able to save the next family from their nightmare???? Longlegs kinda feels like what it would be like if David Lynch directed The Silence of the Lambs. It’s one of the better supernatural films in awhile. It way it was marketed and promoted, it was genius. It grabbed your attention right away. I will say that it’s more suspense than serial killer. You really didn’t know what you were walking into with this horror feature. Oz Perkins, the son of Anthony “Norman Bates” Perkins from the Psycho franchise is really getting more comfortable behind the camera after doing a few films. He’s really starting to find his own unique visual style. It has a similar vibe to Perkins debut feature The Blackcoat’s Daughter when it comes to it’s haunting atmosphere. Longlegs is very colorful, so bizarre, and it just brings you into this cold world. The script explores both of it’s main characters through their very different lives but it’s all connected plus it has a twist to it. Maika Monroe as Lee Harker flexes her talent and she proves once again that she can do any type of role. She’s the ambitious FBI agent that won’t give up on these weird murders from a real life monster. She looks great like always, she is really tested while investigating. Nicolas Cage as Longlegs is amazing here. He gives one of his creepiest performances of all time as this very strange serial killer. He really transforms into the mysterious murderer, you almost forget it’s the Oscar winner at times. The villain has a real unique look to him. The flashbacks and all his crazy scenes steal the entire film when he’s on screen. I just wish that he was in it a little more. I love seeing him in a bigger production again after all the low budget and independent stuff that he usually does these days. The rest of the supporting cast has a few familiar faces that includes Blair Underwood (Just Cause), Alicia Witt (Urban Legend), Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), Michelle Choi-Lee (Death Note), Dakota Daulby (Mayans M.C.), Scott Nicholson (Succession), Carmel Amit (Ghost Wars), Jason William Day (Deadpool), and Lauren Acala (Motherland: Fort Salem). Longlegs has enough intense and suspenseful moments in it despite it being more of a slow burn thriller. It gives you that feeling of dread as it digs more into it all. It has it’s fair share of violence but don’t go into expecting some kind of nasty slasher because it’s not that type of movie. It’s more psychological than non stop killing. Longlegs is one of my favorite horror films of the year because it’s it’s own style to it and it’s something different. You have to be patient with it at times because it’s a character study but I think it’s the worth the wait. It’s very fascinating and it honestly kept me glued to it the whole running time especially during the first half. I think it’s something that you would want to revisit it because it’s one of those features that you notice more every time. I’m looking forward to the next one from Oz Perkins because he always keeps it fresh. RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Decal Releasing! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer looks phenomenal on blu ray. I can only imagine what the 4K looks like but I unfortunately didn’t get that UHD for coverage. Visually, Longlegs is one of the best looking features of the year so far. It has excellent cinematography, unsettling production design, cold locations, and creepy special fx. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the disc. The sound design for Longlegs is top notch so the audio is fantastic. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the creepiness is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH and Spanish subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Oz Perkins. He’s more technical when it comes to behind the scenes stuff and information here. It’s an interesting track with a different point of view than your typical commentary. It has a little over 19 minutes of “On-Set Interviews”. It features chats with lead actress Maika Monroe, director Oz Perkins, actor Blair Underwood, and actress Alicia Witt. They chat about the origins and ideas that sparked the project. They talk about their experiences on it. They bring up their characters and working with each other on it. They go over the Longlegs role and they share their thoughts on it. It’s a nice quick behind the scenes look at this horror production. It has “Evidence” which is basically a photo gallery with crime scene photos from the film that gets more graphic as it goes on. It has “Clues” which was basically it’s entire marking run and campaign. It has a few different spots which includes “Every Year There Was Another”, “Remember To Say Your Prayers”, and “We’ve Been Waiting For Her”. It has a few different promotional trailers which includes “Teaser”, “Dirty + Sweet”, and “Theatrical”. It comes with a slipcover. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
