Frankie Blu Ray Review (Sony)
Frankie is a 2019 drama film co-written & directed by Ira Sachs (Little Men, Love Is Strange, Keep the Lights On, & Forty Shades of Blue). It was co-written by Mauricio Zacharias (Trinta, Love for Sale, Madame Satã, & Rio, I Love You). It was produced by Saïd Ben Saïd (Love Crime, Carnage, Maps to the Stars, & Elle) & Michel Merkt (Little Joe, Les Misérables, Zombi Child, Climax, & Under the Silver Lake). It premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. It had a very limited theatrical release & it grossed $695,705 at the box office.

Frankie is a serious drama that brings together a group of people for a vacation with a big reveal. It explores the relationships between friends, lovers, strangers, children, & parents. The script is good but sometimes it’s all over the place with the variety of characters here plus it’s a little depressing at times. It’s consistent & stays in one big location for the most part. The true highlight here is the great small cast in this, everyone knocks it out of the park in Frankie. Every actor shows off their dramatic skills, Isabelle Huppert is top notch as the lead. She’s going through something big & she has to deal with all these different personalities. Brendan Gleeson has great chemistry with her & they play off each other like the old married couple that they portray with ease. Marisa Tomei has aged well, she still looks amazing & it’s nice to see her do something besides the Spider-Man films. Greg Kinnear has a smaller role than the others but I enjoyed his ambitious character that didn’t seem to care what was going on here besides himself trying to move up & get his life together. If you are into character films or heavy drama, this one is for you. It has a little humor every once in awhile but they play it straight most of the time, it’s worth checking out sometime.
