Woman Who Came Back Blu Ray Review (Imprint Films)

Woman Who Came Back is a 1945 horror film directed by Walter Colmes (Identity Unknown, The Burning Cross, and Accomplice). It’s written by Dennis J. Cooper (Adventures of Superman, Fear, and When Strangers Marry) and Lee Willis. Lorna Webster (played by: Nancy Kelly from The Bad Seed, Jesse James, and Studio One) is the final descendant of witch-hunter Elijah Webster, who burned fifteen women at the stake for witchcraft. After leaving her fiancé doctor Matt Adams (played by: John Loder from Sabotage, King Solomon’s Mines, and The Firechasers) a few years before, she decides to return to her hometown. A bus she that she’s on crashes. Only twelve out of thirteen victims are recovered. After a few different strange events, Lorna thinks a supernatural force is taking control of her life. She investigates everything around her, she notices more evil has corrupted her existence. Can she figure it all out before it’s too late???? Woman Who Came Back is only a little over an hour so it goes by fast. There’s never a dull moment here. It’s one of the better horror features from the 40’s. Woman Who Came Back is really creepy and it has some nightmarish visuals. I enjoyed the atmosphere, this is an earlier Witchcraft movie that still stands out. If you have seen The Bad Seed then you know the talents of the lead actress here. Nancy Kelly as Lorna Webster is great as the tortured woman. She going through hell in this. John Loder as Matt Adams is a blast from the past that tries his best to help out his former lover. They both had solid chemistry in this. The supporting cast includes Otto Kruger, Ruth Ford, Harry Tyler, and Almira Sessions. The script had some tense moments and it had some quality suspense. The only thing I wasn’t a big fan of was the ending. It kinda made some earlier scenes not really make much sense because of the direction it went. Regardless, it was very entertaining and fun. I’ll definitely be revisiting this again soon, RECOMMENDED!!!!Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Imprint Films! This 1080p (1.37:1) transfer is very impressive especially for something made in the 40’s. The black and white visuals really pop on the screen for this newer 4K restoration from the original nitrate negative. It has an English: LPCM 2.0 Mono track on the disc. The audio is great especially the score. All of the dialogue is very clean, the creepiness is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has a brand new exclusive “Audio Commentary” with film scholar Kelly Robinson. It has the brand new exclusive a little over 29 minute “Portraits of the Past”, David Huckvale chats about Woman Who Came Back. It has the brand new exclusive “Haunted by the Witch: From Salem to Eben Rock”. It’s an almost 14 minute video essay by author Joseph Dwyer. It has completely different artwork underneath and photos on the reverse side. It comes with a high quality slipbox. I love that Imprint Films always brings forgotten movies back to life with their amazing home video releases. I think they might be the most underrated boutique label overseas.
