Shiver Me Timbers Blu Ray Review (Gravitas Ventures)

Shiver Me Timbers is a 2025 slasher co-written, produced, casted, edited, and directed by Paul Stephen Mann (Incantation, Dreamland, and Clubbin). It’s based on E.C. Segar’s classic character Popeye The Sailor Man. There’s multiple Popeye horror films that have been finished besides this one which includes Popeye’s Revenge and Popeye: The Slayer Man. In Northern California during the summer of 1986, Olive Oyl (played by: Amy Mackie) with her cinema- obsessed friends and brother Castor (played by: Brendan Nelson from One Goes Astray) go on a camping trip to witness the rare meteor shower with the arrival of Halley’s comet. It quickly turns into a violent nightmare when a meteor from the comet transforms sailor Popeye (played by: David Hallows from Jurassic Island) into a terrifying and unstoppable brutal killing machine (played by: Tony Greer from A True Mismatch) that wants to murder anyone in his path!!!! Shiver Me Timbers capitalizes on the iconic cartoon character Popeye The Sailor Man finally being public domain after all these years. In horror, it’s been a real popular trend to take one of these kid friendly roles and turn them into a slasher. I’ve already covered Winnie The Pooh and The Grinch earlier for these types of low budget exploitation features, now it’s time for Popeye The Sailor. The script for Shiver Me Timbers takes your outsider group of friends going camping and something goes terribly wrong. Newcomer Amy Mackie makes her film debut as the lead Olive Oyl. She’s solid as the unlucky girl at the wrong place at the wrong time. Tony Greer is great as the mutated monster version of the legendary Popeye The Sailor Man. The thing that really helps and elevates this vicious villain is the impressive special fx. It’s a very unique and creepy take for the known role. The rest of the supporting cast includes David Hallows, Brendan Nelson, Paul Stephen Mann, Leona Roberts, Niamh Parrington, Joel McDade, Seb Lord, Ross Dillon, Yu Heng Li (Two Weeks In), Keith Hewitt (Whisky Galore), Paul Dewdney (Torture), Murdo Adams (Weegies VS Zombies), and Stephen Corrall (Trauma Therapy: Psychosis). Most of the cast here have only done this movie or only a few more besides Shiver Me Timbers. So it definitely makes the acting interesting for this slasher, performances are hit or miss but it works better for something like this at least. Honestly, the real star of Shiver Me Timbers is the quality special fx from artists Meg Hankin, Hannah Toman, and Craig Ewing.. There’s all kinds of creative and gruesome kills in this with some nice gore. It’s still cool to see practical used in these independents instead of non stop CGI. It has a consistent flow to it, it keeps itself going with very few dull moments. It has fun atmosphere and it’s much better than I thought it would be. Shiver Me Timbers is actually one of the better recent slashers to take advantage of public domain. It’s a blast, this would be a good one to watch with a group of friends with some alcohol. I’m hoping that they do more of these in the future, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Gravitas Ventures! This 1080p (2.37:1) transfer looks great on home video. They really took advantage of their special fx and it really pops here when it comes to the visuals. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the disc. The audio is way better than expected especially during the wicked killing spree from Popeye great, the suspenseful moments really stand out. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the bloodshed is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. There’s no extras on this home video release. It’s a professionally made on demand BD-R. It’s available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com, CHECK IT OUT!!!!!
