Amityville Ripper DVD Review (SRS Cinema)

Amityville Ripper is a 2023 horror comedy film written and directed by Bobby Canipe Jr (Night Whispers, Woke, Grandma, and Nundead). It was produced by Ron Bonk (Amityville VR, Amityville Backrooms, Amityville Bigfoot, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville Turkey Day, Amityville Shark House, Amityville Karen, Amityville Death Toilet, and Amityville AI) and 25 others. It had an estimated budget of $40,000. When a quirky collector Marianne (played by: Kelsey Ann Baker from Dismembered, Grandma, and Red Light District Shark Attack) acquires a strange knife at an online Amityville auction, little does she know that this blade carries the supernatural essence of Jack the Ripper (played by: Josh Allman from Grandma). Hosted on the night of her brother Nicols (played by: Hunter Redfern from Crackcoon, Grandma, and The Wendigo) wild party, a séance gone awry with her best friend Annie (played by: Angel Nichole Bradford from Debbie Does Demons, Crackcoon, Killer Campout Part II, Shark Exorcist 2, and Backwoods Bubba) unleashes this murderer into the modern world. The group find themselves in a race to escape, all while trying to survive the Ripper!!!! Amityville Ripper had so much potential with the mixing of Jack the Ripper and the Amityville Horror house. I was really curious how they were going to pull off that unique concept. It’s more of a silly comedy rather than an actual horror feature. The script tries way too hard to be self aware, it was kinda funny at first but it gets really annoying fast in Amityville Ripper. Kelsey Ann Baker, Anna Clary (Mutilator 2), and Angel Nichole Bradford are the only cast members that actually try to be serious here for the most part. They are all solid. The rest of supporting cast includes Hunter Redfern, Ryan Martel (Debbie Does Demons), Josh Allman, Jamie Apple (Karate Ghost), Christopher Korek (Amityville Turkey Day), Justin W. Fox (Amityville AI), Brianna Shea (Trashy), and Chris Lutterloah (Red Light District Shark Attack). The entire cast besides the 3 actresses that I listed above are very over the top here and they try to give their live action cartoon vibes with their goofy roles. Nothing really happens until about 45 minutes in and there’s no real character development in all that time. Amityville Ripper had a solid body count when it finally turns into a slasher. The low budget kills are probably the best thing about it but none of them were creative or anything like that. I’m kinda surprised that It wasn’t sleazy at all and it was very tame in that department. Amityville Ripper kinda goes back and forth with what it wants to be. It has some darker moments but then it returns to it’s slapstick jokes. I wish it had more of an identity because this no budget production is all over the place. I’m all about the Amityville universe and I’ve honestly seen much worse than this when it comes to that crazy sub-genre but it’s still just okay. It’s currently on Tubi if you are curious about it. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Bobby Canipe Jr. The commercials and news stuff in the beginning features a bunch of the backers. He chats about being excited about finally doing an Amityville film and he mentions his personal favorite one from the wild franchise. He sits down and breaks down Amityville Ripper as he revisits it. He has some fun here, he drops lots of information and some behind the scenes stories from the independent production. He shows his appreciation for alien and space, he teases a possible sequel for this. It has a little over 9 minutes of “Bloopers”. It has the 2 minute “Full Video Commercial”. It has a “Trailer” for Amityville Ripper. It has a 3 minute “Music Video” from Septum Bone. It has the almost 3 minute “Indiegogo Video”. It has a variety of SRS Cinema “Trailers”.
