A Good Person Blu Ray Review (Warner Bros/MGM)
A Good Person is a 2023 drama film written, directed, and produced by Zach Braff (Scrubs, Garden State, Wish I Was Here, and Going in Style). It was co-produced by lead actress Florence Pugh (Fighting with My Family, Little Women, The Wonder, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish). It only grossed $3 million at the box office during it’s theatrical run. Allison (played by: Florence Pugh from Thunderbolts, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Midsommar, Don’t Worry Darling, and Dune: Part Two) is an aspiring musician, engaged to Nathan (played by: Chinaza Uche from Silo and Dickinson). The day following a family party, Allison causes an accident while driving with her eyes off the road, killing her future brother and sister-in-law Jesse (played by: Toby Onwumere from Sense8, Empire, and The Matrix Resurrections) & Molly (played by: Nichelle Hines from The Resident and The King of Queens), and sustaining critical injuries. One year later, dealing with severe depression and unable to deal with her guilt, Allison lives with her mother Diane (played by: Molly Shannon from SNL, Superstar, Never Been Kissed, and A Night at the Roxbury), who attempts to curb her daughter’s addiction to pain pills.
Meanwhile, Nathan and Molly’s ex-cop father Daniel (played by: Morgan Freeman from Se7en, Million Dollar Baby, Driving Miss Daisy, Fallen trilogy, The Dark Knight trilogy, The Shawshank Redemption, and Deep Impact) is taking care of his granddaughter Ryan (played by: Celeste O’Connor from Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Freaky), who is still processing the loss of her mother. After failing to get drugs illicitly from her friend and after a humiliating encounter with two high school acquaintances leads her into a downward spiral, Allison joins a therapy group. There, she unexpectedly encounters Daniel, who reveals in a meeting that his drinking resulted in repeated blackouts where he wouldn’t remember his violent behavior, and that in one such occasion he destroyed the hearing in Nathan’s ear. Ryan, in her turn, is bullied for her status as an orphan and in trouble for her behavior. Allison meets Daniel at his house, and while leaving, she is confronted by Ryan for Allison’s direct responsibility in her mother’s death. Allison is determined to get her life back together and now she wants to reconnect with her past family out of her guilt from the deadly wreck that changed everything forever. Things start to look up but as always something tests her sobriety on her path to redemption. Daniel is trying to hold on to his but this new friendship starts bringing back bad memories. Can both of them stay strong and win this rough battle with their past????

A Good Person is one of the best movies of the year and honestly no one is really talking about this one. I know that it didn’t do great in theaters and it flew way under the radar during it’s run. Director Zach Braff made one of the best directorial debuts in cinema with Garden State and I think A Good Person is his 2nd best so far when it comes to him being behind the camera. I know he’s mainly known as an actor but he is very under-rated as an filmmaker. This a great story of tragedy, failure, and redemption. I know dramas are never flashy and super entertaining to most but A Good Person is just truthful and real with it’s approach. The script and acting is top notch here, Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman turn in two of their best performances in awhile in this. Their chemistry is impressive during A Good Person. I love all the different levels on their companionship during this feature. They have so much to explore with each character’s current struggles at the time and they both have the same common goal here. The rest of the supporting cast was solid in A Good Person. Yes, this is a little depressing at moments but it just has such a nice build up to it. I truly hope A Good Person finds another life on home video because it honestly deserves it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Let’s discuss the high definition presentation from MGM and Warner Bros Pictures! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer looks really good for it’s blu ray debut. This drama is not exactly flashy or some crazy visual stand out when it comes to the cinematography but it’s very clean polished looking feature. It has some nice production design and locations. It has a English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the disc. All of the dialogue is very clean and the music is elevated here. It has a few different options that includes English SDH, French, and Spanish when it comes to the subtitles. This home video release has no extras on it besides some “Trailers”. It also comes with a slipcover and a digital code. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
