100 Tears Blu Ray Review (Unearthed Films)

100 Tears is a 2007 slasher directed and special fx by Marcus Koch (Rot, Bad Blood, Hi-8, American Guinea Pig: Bloodshock, Earth Girls Are Sleazy, and Fell). It’s written and produced by Joe Davison (Into the Darkness, Experiment 7, Frost Bite, The Bell Keeper, and As Night Falls). They were considering a sequel at one point but it never happened. It had an estimated budget of $75,000. After being accused of awful crimes that he didn’t commit. A lonely circus performer Gurdy the Clown (played by: Jack Amos from Unearthed, Real Premonition, The Uh-Oh Show, The Ghosts of Ybor: Charlie Wall, and Experiment 7) takes his gruesome revenge on everyone who did him wrong. The vicious act wakes up something inside of him which he cannot stop. Years later, his personal inner-demons can’t be controlled at all. He’s become a urban legend and a tabloid sensation from his notorious murders. He is looking for his next victims to crave his extreme blood lust!!!! I feel like Art the Clown is very similar to Gurdy but he ended up becoming way more popular somehow. I know that feeling all top well unfortunately. It’s a shame that 100 Tears never got the proper respect it truly deserved. It’s always a great sign when the director is also a special fx artist for a horror production. That damn near always works and it just elevates everything for the movie. Marcus Koch is responsible for the gore for such films as Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, Sweatshop, Quarantine 2: Terminal, Truth or Dare franchise, Circus of the Dead, American Guinea Pig franchise, We Are Still Here, Death-Scort Service, and Frankenstein Created Bikers. 100 Tears starts out very strong with a very high body count. It doesn’t hold back and it’s gruesome with it’s over the top kills. It’s a brutal and nasty slasher that keeps delivering lots of blood. It has a simple plot and characters for it’s script but it makes up for all of that with it’s non stop violence. Jack Amos is much better than expected as the main villain Grundy the Clown. It’s a role that speaks with it’s actions not his words. The rest of the supporting cast includes Raine Brown (Plasterhead), Georgia Chris (Bloody 27), Joe Davison (Stranger Things), Kibwe Dorsey (Dead End), Rod Grant (Die Die Delta Pi), Jeff Dylan Graham (Home Sick), Jeremy King (Scare Package), Ted Geoghegan (Hatchet III), and Denise Liptak (The Uh-Oh Show). It’s a shame the sequel they originally planned for this never got made. 100 Tears is one of the most underrated clown horror features and I love that it’s not watered down like so many others. It’s a blast and it’s highly entertaining, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Unearthed Films! This 1080p NC-17 extended director’s cut (1.78:1) transfer is from a brand new restoration. I’ve owned the original DVD from years ago and this is a nice improvement over that home video release. It’s definitely very low budget and independent but it has a nice style to it’s crazy visuals. It has an English: LPCM 2.0 track on the disc. The audio stands out when it comes to the music here. The batshit moments are some of the more impressive moments for the sound. All of the dialogue is very clean, the bloodbath is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Marcus Koch and Unearthed Films own Stephen Biro. They chat about it’s underground reputation and it’s following. They talk about the production on a variety subjects like distribution, the cast, special fx, kills, the actual shoot, it’s concept, and the overall performances. It’s packed with lots of inside information and personal stories from 100 Tears. It has the 93 minute “Original Cut”. It has a little over 45 minute “Director Interview” with Marcus Koch. He does a question and answer session for fans. Koch keeps it fresh with the information and stories from the clown slasher. I’m pretty impressed that most of it is different from the stuff in the commentary. It has the archive little over 23 minute “Blood Guts and Greasepaint: Making 100 Tears”. It has some interviews with the cast and crew. It has some behind the scenes footage. It’s a cool inside look into this independent horror movie. It has the archive almost 21 minute “Original Behind the Scenes” from 2008. It’s more of the same from the previous extra but it adds more to everything. It has the archive little over 34 minute “Additional Behind the Scenes”. It’s another deep dive into this low budget film. It has 16 “Deleted Scenes” that’s 11 minutes. It has 5 minutes of “Outtakes”. It has the almost 21 minute “Marcus Koch’s Childhood Short Films” with introductions from the director. It has 2 different “Trailers” for 100 Tears. Just a heads up, all of the extras are older upscaled standard definition. Unearthed Films kills it again and 100 Tears is loaded with all kinds of bonus material.
