The Intern 4K Review (Warner Bros.)

The Intern is a 2015 dramedy film written, produced, and directed by Nancy Meyers (The Parent Trap, The Holiday, It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, and What Women Want). Reese Witherspoon was originally cast as the lead. The budget was $35,000,000 and it grossed $194,764,672 worldwide at the box office. Seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (played by: Robert De Niro from Heat, Goodfellas, Casino, Meet the Parents franchise, Analyze This franchise, Showtime, Midnight Run, and Mean Streets) is bored with retirement. He decides to find something to keep him busy. He gets a senior internship at an online site that’s founded and ran by the ambitious Jules Ostin (played by: Anne Hathaway from The Dark Knight Rises, Get Smart, Havoc, The Devil Wears Prada, Rachel Getting Married, and Interstellar). At first, she doesn’t want to work with the older man but she changes her mind after he impresses the whole office with his dedication and problem solving skills. Will these two be able to work together???? The Intern is something a little different from director and writer Nancy Meyers who’s mainly known for her romantic comedies. This one deals with an unlikely friendship with two people that are very different from each other and there’s a huge age difference between them. Ben Whittaker doesn’t know what to do with life after retiring and losing his wife. Jules Ostin is too obsessed with her company which leaves her working all the time. She’s starting to neglect her family and it’s becoming a serious issue. Nancy Meyers is excellent at creating complicated characters. The Intern has a nice mix of comedy and drama. Unfortunately at his age, iconic actor Robert De Niro doesn’t get the same type of roles later on his career like he used to back in the day. This was one of his best performances in awhile. He is top notch as Ben Whittaker, he’s a guy trying keep busy after experiencing some huge changes. Anne Hathaway is great as Jules Ostin, she wants to do everything herself but she learns to ask for help after realizing it’s messing with her marriage. These two have fantastic chemistry here. The rest of the supporting cast includes Rene Russo (Lethal Weapon franchise), Mary Kay Place (The Big Chill), Adam Devine (The Righteous Gemstones), Nat Wolff (The Stand), Celia Weston (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Anders Holm (Workaholics), Zack Pearlman (Why Him?), Linda Lavin (Santa Clarita Diet), and Christina Scherer (True Blood). The Intern has a solid build up and it all comes together. It’s entertaining and it has heart. It still holds up after all these years, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Warner Bros Pictures! This 2160p (1.78:1) transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 looks great in 4K. This is nice upgrade compared to it’s original 2016 blu ray home video release. The picture quality is much sharper on this UHD, I honestly wasn’t expecting much of a difference with this one but it was a real nice surprise. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on this disc. The audio is solid but it’s not the type of explosive feature that’s going to fully test your home set up. All of the dialogue is crisp, the comedy is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has the almost 6 minute “The Three Interns”. It has interviews with Zack Pearlman, Adam DeVine and Jason Orley. Ironically, only one of these actors actually plays an intern in this despite the title of the feature. They talk about their characters here. They go over their collaboration together in this. They chat about working with acting legend Robert De Niro and tell some stories about him. It has the almost 5 minute “Learning from Experience”. They chat about the younger characters from this production. They bring up the director usually deals with older people but this is mainly focused on a totally different age group. Nancy says she’s done enough romance and she wanted to try another kind of relationship with this. They talk about the subplots and more interesting things in The Intern. It has interviews with the cast and crew. It has the little over 6 minute “Designs on Life”. It has interviews with the cast and crew including some of the set decorators. They show their appreciation for Nancy Meyers style and vision for this production. They chat about the overall look and stuff that really pops out visually.
