Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (aKa Hobbs & Shaw and Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw) is a 2019 action film directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, & Deadpool 2). It’s a spin-off of The Fast and the Furious franchise. It was written by Drew Pearce (Hotel Artemis, Iron Man 3, Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King, & Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) & Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious franchise, 47 Ronin, Wanted, & Cellular). It was produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Snitch, Baywatch, Rampage, Shazam!, & Ballers), Jason Statham (Viva La Madness), It was produced by Ethan Smith (Deadpool 2, Fury, Atomic Blonde, Joy, & Sabotage), Steven Chasman (Kiss of the Dragon, The One, Mechanic: Resurrection, Transporter franchise, & War), & Dany Garcia (Jumanji: The Next Level, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Skyscraper, & Fighting with My Family). Shane Black was one of the original choices to direct this. It had a budget of $200 million & it grossed $758.9 million worldwide at the box office!!!

In London, Hattie Shaw (played by: Vanessa Kirby from Mission: Impossible – Fallout, The Crown, The Frankenstein Chronicles, Kill Command, & Jupiter Ascending) & her team of MI6 agents attempt to retrieve a programmable super virus known as “Snowflake” from terrorist organization Eteon. Brixton Lore (played by: Idris Elba from The Wire, The Losers, Thor franchise, Avengers: Age of Ultron/Infinity War, Star Trek Beyond, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, 28 Weeks Later, American Gangster, & Pacific Rim), an Eteon operative with cybernetic implants that allow him to perform superhuman features arrives & kills all the agents except Hattie. She injects Snowflake into herself before escaping. Brixton frames Hattie for killing her team & stealing Snowflake. This forces her to go on the run. Luke Hobbs (played by: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson from Fast & Furious franchise, WWE, Rampage, Baywatch, San Andreas, Faster, Doom, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Skyscraper, Walking Tall, Southland Tales, The Rundown, Jumanji franchise, & Snitch) & Hattie’s brother Deckard Shaw (played by: Jason Statham from The Expendables franchise, Transporter franchise, War, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Death Race, 13, Killer Elite, Crank 1/2, The Meg, The Mechanic 1/2, Ghosts of Mars, & Snatch) are both informed about the missing virus. They want nothing to do with each other & decide to go their separate ways.
Deckard’s visits his mother Queenie (played by: Helen Mirren from Red 1/2, Fast & Furious franchise, Hitchcock, Caligula, The Long Good Friday, Anna, & The Queen) in prison, she says she wishes she could see both of her children in the same room at once. Luke gets some assistance from his old friend Locke (played by: Ryan Reynolds from the Deadpool franchise, Green Lantern, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Blade: Trinity, & Pokémon Detective Pikachu). They reluctantly agree to work together to track it down. Deckard recognizes Brixton as an old colleague turned enemy that he thought he killed in the past. Hattie, Deckard, & Luke track down Professor Andreiko (played by: Eddie Marsan from 21 Grams, The World’s End, Vice, Ray Donovan, Deadpool 2, & Sherlock Holmes franchise) who created Snowflake to find a solution. They are desperate & rushing to find a way to get the virus out of Hattie before she dies from it. They go to Deckard’s former girlfriend Madame M (played by: Eiza González from Godzilla vs. Kong, Baby Driver, Alita: Battle Angel, & From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) for help to go against the powerful Eteon. They need to go somewhere that’s to their advantage & off the grid, Luke takes them to his family home in Samoa so he can get a device fixed by his talented mechanic brother Jonah (played by: Cliff Curtis from Fear the Walking Dead, Sunshine, 10,000 BC, Collateral Damage, & Training Day) before it’s too late. Eteon shows up & they are ready to destroy everything, can this unlikely combination come together & defeat these dangerous foes????
Hobbs & Shaw definitely is better than the last few Furious sequels. It’s one of my personal favorites when it comes to the action sub-genre for 2019. This one has the proper balance of action & comedy which makes it for a very fun ride. It’s one of the most entertaining experiences that I had in the cinema this year. You would never expect the unlikely duo of Luke Hobbs & Deckard Shaw working together so it was hilarious to see them two characters interact. They were competing against each other half the time so it was interesting to see what they would do next. The chemistry between The Rock & Jason Statham was amazing, it’s cool to see those two major action stars in the same film again especially Statham because he doesn’t really get that many big projects these days. Vanessa Kirby is beautiful, she is bad ass in this & holds her own against everyone else. Idris Elba is a great villain, it takes a powerful role to match up with Hobbs & Shaw at the same time. It has a solid supporting cast that includes Ryan Reynolds in a uncredited role, Helen Mirren, Cliff Curtis, Kevin Hart, & Eddie Marsan that boosted the overall quality of the production. The script knew what it was doing, it delivered everything that you would expect from a popcorn flick. The main thing that I didn’t like about this spin off was that they tried too hard to make Deckard Shaw a good guy in this. They even explained what happened to make him completely change which I felt was a kinda a cop out to make the audience like him more. I honestly really enjoyed how his character was before & I thought it worked great in the Furious franchise. I am hoping they do more spin offs in the future. This was better than expected, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation from Universal! This 2160p (2.39:1) transfer with Dolby Vision & HDR10+ looks fantastic in 4K! So many different beautiful & interesting locations during this feature, they really pop out here. They take full advantage of their big budget & travel across the world for this one. The visuals are at the hghest quality for this. It has a variety of different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, French: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, & Spanish: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 on this UHD. I’ll tell you right now, this is one of the best sounding home video releases for 2019 & it’s definitely reference quality if you looking to show off your set up or just test it out. The dialogue is very clean, all the action has a top notch boost to it, & the music is elevated here. It also has English SDH, French, & Spanish subtitles. This release is beyond impressive when it comes to picture & sound!!!!

He chats about putting together the cast, actors, & their performances in this. He talks about the story/concept, action, visual effects, & the various shooting locations. It’s full of information about the film so if you were ever curious about something here check it out. It has a little over 10 minute “Alternate Opening”. It has a little over 34 minutes of 22 “Deleted/Extended/Alternate Scenes” which includes Brixton Opens Case and Grenade Explodes, Extended Hobbs and Sam in the Pancake House, Extended Pancake House with Locke, Extended Hobbs and Shaw Face Off; Extended Shaw Tracks Hattie, Hobbs Gets Handsy with Hattie, Extended Hobbs and Hattie Tango, Extended Car Chase Dialogue; Passport Check – Alternate; Extended Dinkley on the Plane, Maximum Weight These Parachutes Hold?, Dinkley in His Office – Alternate, Samoa Truck with Radio, Extended Hobbs and Hattie Talk Family, Jonah – Let Me Be Clear, My Land, My Plan, Extended Hobbs and Hattie Sunset, Extended Hobbs and Jonah Talk, Extended Hobbs and Hattie Talk, Extended Battle, Cliffside Walk, & Hobbs and Locke Phone Call. I am surprised some of these didn’t make the final cut. They shot all kinds of extra material for this movie & it’s a nice extra to have. “Johnson & Statham: Hobbs & Shaw” is almost 4 minutes. It has interviews with director David Leitch, writer Chris Morgan, actors Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Vanessa Kirby, & various members of the production. They said they had a unique & great chemistry from the beginning. They talk about wanting to expand their interaction with each other after the Fast & Furious films. They bring up how different they are & the complete opposite styles they have. “Progress of a Fight Scene with Director David Leitch” is almost 5 minutes. The director breaks down & explains the fighting styles of the different characters from the film. He goes over the conditions & visual style during them. It has all kinds of behind the scenes footage. “Practical Action” is almost 4 minutes. It has interviews with director David Leitch, actors Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Vanessa Kirby, Idris Elba, & various members of the production. They go over various fights & stunts from the production. It shows them prepping them in videos before they were filmed. “The Bad Guy” is 2 minutes. It has interviews with director David Leitch, writer Chris Morgan, actors Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Vanessa Kirby, Idris Elba, Eddie Marsan, & various members of the production. They chat about the new character. They said they had to top the other villains from the Fast & Furious films so this one had to be memorable. They joke that Idris was the one that came up with the black Superman line. “The Sister” is almost 4 minutes. It has interviews with director David Leitch, actors Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Vanessa Kirby, Idris Elba, Helen Mirren, & various members of the production. They chat about her being a strong female character especially with who she’s related to. They talk about the actress training, working hard on the stunts & action from the feature. “Hobbs’ Family Tree” is a little over 3 minutes. It has interviews with actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson & the others that played his family here. It brings up each family member & talks a little about them. They chat about their experience on the film. “The Matriarch” is a little over a minute. It has interviews with director David Leitch, actors Jason Statham, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Kirby, & various members of the production. They talk about how important the role is. They chat about the great actress & how she should have her own movie. Jason says in this one you get to know Deckard better. “New Friends” is a little over 2 minutes. It has interview with actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He said he pulled some favors for this spin off & he got some friends involved in the project. He chats about both being major surprises for the release. “Elevator Action” is almost 2 minutes. It has interviews with various members of the production. It goes over one of the major action scenes from the feature. “Stunt Show and Tell” is almost 4 minutes. Director David Leitch takes you behind the scenes & breaks down some of the biggest action scenes from the production. “Keeping it in the Family: A Conversation with Roman and Dwayne” is a little over 5 minutes. It’s a conversation with real life family members Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson & Roman Reigns. They chat about their family history & working with each other. “Blind Fury” is almost two minutes. It has a interview with actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He tells a story about grandfather. “Love at First Bite” is almost 2 minutes. It has an interview with actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. He jokes about his dog Hobbs being the real star of the film. He talks about him being in this. This release is loaded with extras & it covers pretty much everything about the production. It also has a slipcover, a digital code, & a blu ray copy of the release. Add this to your Fast & Furious collection ASAP! A few store exclusives were released for this.
