It was directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man franchise, Made, Chef, Elf, Zathura, The Lion King, and The Jungle Book), Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink, The Great Outdoors, and Tales from the Crypt), Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch, iCarly, The Goldbergs, and The Santa Con), Shiri Appleby (Grown-ish, The Wonder Years, Unreal, Black-ish, and New Amsterdam), Lea Thompson (The Goldbergs, Switched at Birth, Stargirl, and Star Trek: Picard), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld, For Better or Worse, Everybody Hates Chris, and Just Looking), Alex Reid (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Middle, Malcolm in the Middle, and The Michael J. Fox Show), Jaffar Mahmood (Reboot, Santa Clarita Diet, Mr. Mayor, Modern Family, and Killing It), and 17 others. This is a prequel and spin-off to The Big Bang Theory. It was produced by actor Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, Call Me Kat, Special, and Hollywood). It aired from 2017 to 2024, it lasted for 7 seasons. Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage is a brand new spin-off television series. 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper (played by: Iain Armitage from The Big Bang Theory, Ghostwriter, The Glass Castle, Scoob!, and Big Little Lies) is having a tough time growing up in East Texas. The gifted kid struggles to fit in as he advances several grades because of his high IQ. Sheldon must deal with the crazy world as he’s trying to enjoy his young life. It’s time meet The Big Bang Theory’s genius during his interesting childhood. He goes on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become later on. He gets help from his family which includes George (played by: Lance Barber from The Big Bang Theory, Gangster Squad, For Your Consideration, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Comeback), Mary (played by: Zoe Perry from Scandal, The Family, Roseanne, and Grey’s Anatomy), Missy (played by: Raegan Revord from Wish Upon, Teachers, and Modern Family), Georgie (played by: Montana Jordan from Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage), and his Meemaw Connie (played by: Annie Potts from the Ghostbusters franchise, Pretty in Pink, Toy Story franchise, Designing Women, Who’s Harry Crumb?, and Crimes of Passion)!!!! Young Sheldon is a fascinating sitcom. I think it could be enjoyed even if you are not familiar with The Big Bang Theory because it’s very different from that universe besides the main character. It’s a funny family comedy that deals with a family that are all very different from each other. Yeah, it’s originally aimed at a younger version of the Sheldon Cooper but it’s honestly much more than that. There’s so many hilarious moments here dealing with coming of age but being a genius and smarter than almost everyone around you. The Big Bang Theory was very California in it’s environment but the Texas atmosphere really separates Young Sheldon from it’s original television show. There’s a few really big respected filmmakers like Jon Favreau and Howard Deutch that directed episodes for this. Plus it has a few familiar faces when it comes to acting behind the camera like Jason Alexander, Melissa Joan Hart, Shiri Appleby, and Lea Thompson. The Big Bang Theory’s own Jim Parsons is the narrator for this entire series. It’s really cool to hear him describe these earlier events from his iconic role. Iain Armitage is perfect as the younger Sheldon Cooper, it’s wild how much he transformed into that known character. He has all the mannerisms and everything down perfect for genius and awkward personality. Lance Barber is hilarious as George. He doesn’t understand his son most of the time but he tries his best to help raise him. Zoe Perry as Mary is spot on to her real life mother Laurie Metcalf’s previous portrayal of Mary Cooper on The Big Bang Theory. She’s the heart and the morals of Young Sheldon. She’s the one that guides the outcast more than anyone here. Annie Potts was the only actor that I actually knew when this comedy started, she was the big name when it came to Young Sheldon. She’s probably the one that Sheldon respects the most from his family and she doesn’t hold back when it comes to teaching him the rough ways to life. Montana Jordan as Georgie and Raegan Revord as Missy are Sheldon’s siblings that truly do not understand their unique brother at first but they learn to help him during his many issues over the years. The rest of the supporting cast includes Wallace Shawn (The Princess Bride), Craig T. Nelson (Poltergeist), Matt Hobby (The Grinder), Wyatt McClure (The Santa Clauses), Emily Osment (Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage), Ed Begley Jr. (Pineapple Express), Rex Linn (Cliffhanger), Rachel Bay Jones (The Good Doctor), Will Sasso (Mad TV), Reba McEntire (Tremors), Jason Alexander (Shallow Hal), Bob Newhart (The Big Bang Theory), Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Richard Kind (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under), Diane Ladd (Wild at Heart), Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory), Robert Picardo (The Howling), and so many others. Young Sheldon is loaded with all kinds of character actors that you will recognize from so many different projects over the years. It has some odd humor at times but it’s so much fun and very entertaining to experience. Despite Sheldon’s unique personality, it has plenty of heart and some fantastic family scenarios during it’s run. It was much better than expected, it’s definitely worth checking out sometime. These 1080p (1.78:1) transfers on all 141 episodes look amazing on blu ray. This is one of the better looking television shows out there. It has English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks on each episode on all 14 discs. This sitcom isn’t going to blast your set up but it does sound pretty good on home video. All of the dialogue is crisp, the laughs are elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. Season 1 on disc 2 includes the almost 10 minute “Young Sheldon: An Origin Story”. It has the little over 4 minute “Sibling Revelry”. Season 3 on disc 2 includes the little over 5 minute “The Coopers, East Texas, and the ’80s”. Season 4 on disc 2 includes the little over 8 minute “Cooped Up with the Coopers”. Season 5 on disc 1 includes the little over 8 minute “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun: Young Sheldon at 100”. Season 7 on disc 2 which includes the little over 11 minute “Sheldon’s Secret Origins and Easter Eggs””. All of these shorter extras feature interviews with the cast and crew. It has some behind the scenes footage. It quickly takes you through most of the seasons. Sheldon’s Secret Origins is the only brand new exclusive from this set. It mainly focuses on Easter Eggs and them reflecting on their last season for the entire series. The others were all available on previous separate blu ray home video releases for each season of Young Sheldon. This is a must own if you are a huge fan of this wacky Sheldon Cooper and The Big Bang Theory universe. It’s a creative and fascinating prequel to the popular television show.
