Werewolves Blu Ray Review (Universal)
Werewolves is a 2024 horror film produced and directed by Steven C. Miller (Silent Night, Under the Bed, Automaton Transfusion, The Aggression Scale, Extraction, Marauders, First Kill, Arsenal, and Escape Plan 2: Hades). It was written by Matthew Kennedy (Inheritance and Canary Black). It was produced by Michael Becker (The Vault, Walkaway Joe, Worth, Saf3, Pawn, and Zombie Tidal Wave) and 24 others. It grossed $2,116,628 worldwide at the box office. One year ago, a supermoon event triggered a global outbreak that transformed anyone exposed to moonlight into bloodthirsty werewolves for one night only. As the next supermoon rises, former marine Wesley Marshall (played by: Frank Grillo from The Purge franchise, Captain America franchise, The Grey, Tulsa King, End of Watch, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, and Copshop) is working with scientists Dr. Aranda (played by: Lou Diamond Phillips from Stand and Deliver, Young Guns franchise, The Big Hit, Courage under Fire, La Bamba, Renegades, and The First Power) and Dr. Amy Chen (played by: Katrina Law from Arrow, NCIS, Spartacus, Apparition, Hawaii Five-0, and Training Day) to find a cure before all humanity is lost during this madness. Marshall travels through the dangerous streets to get back to his family which includes his sister-in-law Lucy (played by: Ilfenesh Hadera from Baywatch, Billions, Old Boy, Godfather of Harlem, and Chi-Raq) and niece Emma (played by: Kamdynn Gary from One Piece, Panic, and Prey) to protect them from all the monsters outside waiting to rip them apart!!!!!
This was basically The Purge with werewolves and I’m completely down with it. Werewolves was a major surprise, I wasn’t expecting to like it so much. The script has a fascinating concept with some unexpected twists. Former military is working with a scientific group trying to stop a devastating outbreak of vicious and powerful werewolves during one night. Frank Grillo is great as Wesley Marshall, he’s trying to care of his deceased brother’s family while being responsible for keeping the whole community safe from monsters. It’s awesome to see veteran actor Lou Diamond Phillips as Dr. Aranda. He’s mainly been doing television the last few years but he shows up as the lead scientists. Katrina Law is excellent as Dr. Amy Chen, she’s one of the few survivors from the government experiments. Ilfenesh Hadera as Lucy and Kamdynn Gary as Emma are Wesley’s family that he sets up for safety before he leaves for dangerous detail. They are both trapped in their secure house but they have a variety of blood thirsty werewolves outside waiting to attack them.
The rest of the supporting cast includes James Michael Cummings (City on a Hill), Lydia Styslinger (The War with Grandpa), Daniel Fernandez (The Kings of Salsa), James Kyson (BMF), Betzaida LandÃn (Line of Duty), Ian Whyte (Game of Thrones), Dane DiLiegro (Prey), Ian Feuer (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem), and Sam Daly (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox). The werewolves looked amazing here. The special and visual fx were top notch. It has some really gruesome moments in this. Werewolves is the perfect hybrid of horror and action which makes sense considering the director. Steven C. Miller started out doing horror features but lately he’s been behind the camera for action projects starring Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Aaron Eckhart, and Dave Bautista. It really kicks in during the 30 minute mark and it never slows down after that. Werewolves delivers a little bit of everything here, it’s one of the best horror features of the year so far. It’s so much fun and very entertaining with some strong replay value to it. Definitely look into this one, RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Universal Pictures! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer looks fantastic especially for it’s lower budget. They managed to make Werewolves look much bigger than what it actually costs. It has stylish cinematography, gritty production design, colorful locations, and high quality fx that really stand out here. It has English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the disc. The audio is loud and explosive for this action horror hybrid. All of dialogue is crystal clear, the super moon madness is elevated, and the music has a great boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has almost 6 minutes of additional “Deleted Scenes” which includes Moonscreen, Alpha, Turn on Purpose, Always Ready, Entering the Underground, and Downtime in the Bodega. I can see why most of these ended up on the cutting room floor but they are a nice bonus on this home video release. It’s a bunch of character extended moments and it some humor included in it. It also comes with a digital code. If you are into action horror or the werewolf sub-genre, this should be added to the collection. It’s available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
