Video Psycho Blu Ray Review (SRS Cinema)

Video Psycho is a 1997 shot on video horror film co-written, produced, edited, and directed by Del Kary (Cheater Cheater, Audition Killer, and Snuff Perversions: Bizarre Cases of Death). It was co-written by Pete Jacelone (Son of Gacy, Psycho Sisters franchise, Duck! The Carbine High Massacre, Beef: You Are What You Eat, The Killer Clown Meets the Candy Man, The Cannibal Killer: The Real Story of Jeffrey Dahmer, The Erotic Mirror, and The Pogo Film Project). It had an estimated budget of $1,500. Ryan (played by: James Paulson) is a mysterious drifter going from town to town looking for the perfect girlfriend. When he meets Kylie (played by: Jennifer Jordan), he is instantly smitten. Only problem is, Kylie already has a boyfriend named Rick (played by: Jared Treser). Ryan still won’t let anyone stand in his way to be with Kylie. How far will Ryan go for true love???? Video Psycho reminds me of a classic mix of Shot on Video Horror meets The Hitcher. Director Del Kary under the name D.J. Kary for his directorial debut. This was a nice surprise. It has that gritty late 90’s atmosphere to it. I don’t know why but these lower budget productions just came off better than smaller stuff made these days. It’s probably because they had to be way more creative back in the day to pull anything off and technology is so advanced now so it feels so much easier. This manages to keep itself full of tension and thrills. The main cast never did anything else after this but they actually weren’t bad at all in this. Jennifer Jordan really stood out as Kylie, I can see why Ryan automatically was drawn to her right away. The rest of the supporting cast includes Jason Alvord, Shannon Dimick, DeAnna Harrison, Brandy Jordan, Chris Valencia, Charles Simmons, Heidi Munson, Art Molina, Jack Meikle, Adam Kraatz, and Del Kary. Only director Del Kary had other experience in additional films from the entire group of performers here which is a little wild. Don’t expect anything crazy, filthy, and gruesome with this psychological thriller. Video Psycho is unfortunately very tame when it comes to sleaze and gore. Most of the kills are done by strangulation. I wish they would have amped up those important departments for Video Psycho but it’s still worth checking out. It has that small regional charm to it and it honestly feels something that could easily happen. It’s a solid entry for serial killers, snuff films, and hitchhikers gone off the deep end. It’s currently streaming on Tubi if you are curious about it. I’d definitely watch this again, it was a nice find from something I didn’t know anything about!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from SRS Cinema! This 1080p (1.33:1) uncut transfer is newly restored and remastered. Video Psycho definitely has SOV visual style and approach. It takes the audience back to the 90’s, it’s cool that this actually got a Blu Ray home video release after all this time. It has an English: Dolby Digital 2.0 track on the disc. The audio mainly stands out from some of the suspensful moments and it’s score. All of the dialogue is clean, the thrills are elevated, and the music has a decent boost to it. It has an “Audio Commentary” with Del Kary. He chats about the restoration and remastered sound for this newer release. He says it’s the 25th anniversary of it, he goes over some of the equipment used on it. He talks about the development of it. It was originally put out on VHS. He provides all kinds of information and stories about Video Psycho. It has the little over 18 minute “Victims of The Psycho Interview”. It has conversations with Heidi Munson, Charles Simmons, Shannon Dimick, and Brandy Jordan. They answer various questions about Video Psycho. They go over their experiences, their work in it, and they share a few stories about the independent production. It has the almost 13 minute “Art Molina Interview”. He reminisces about his memories of the suspense thriller. He goes over his character and his connection to the video store element to it. It has the little over 5 minute “Adam Kraatz Interview”. The actor said it was fun making this. He remembers doing all kinds of re-takes while putting it together. He goes over some of the violence or stand out scenes from it. It has the almost 10 minute “Jennifer Jordan Interview”. The lead actress goes over death scenes. She brings up her favorite scene where is the shower one where she was actually wearing a bikini during it. She goes over the cast a little bit and what she really thought about them. She hasn’t seen it in around 20+ years. She’s the niece of the director. It has the little over 16 minute “Rehearsal, Deleted and Alternate Scenes”. It has a little over 15 minutes of “Outtakes”. It has “Early Trailer”, “Official Trailer”, and “Teaser Trailers” for Video Psycho. It has a variety of SRS Cinema related “Trailers”. It’s a professionally made on demand BD-R.
