Unit 234 Blu Ray Review (Brainstorm Media)
Unit 234 is a 2024 thriller directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., It Takes Two, Fools Rush In, Ever After: A Cinderella Story, The Bounty Hunter, and Fool’s Gold). It was written by Derek Steiner (Meat, Plan C, and Blind Date). It was executive produced by actress Colleen Camp (Shattered Image, She Creature, How to Make a Monster, Teenage Caveman, The Day the World Ended, Knock Knock, Monstrous, Father Stu, Borderline, and Earth vs. the Spider). It grossed $17,231 during it’s limited theatrical run. After the shocking discovery of an unconscious man named Clayton (played by: Jack Huston from Kill Your Darlings, American Hustle, House of Gucci, Mr. Mercedes, The Irishman, and Fargo) in a locked unit, the lone employee of a remote storage facility Laurie Saltair (played by: Isabelle Fuhrman from The Orphan franchise, Don’t Let Me Go, Cell, Masters of Sex, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, Horizon, and The Hunger Games) must fight to survive the night against a ruthless gang lead by Jules (played by: Don Johnson from Miami Vice, Knives Out, Django Unchained, Tin Cup, The Hot Spot, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, Nash Bridges, Watchmen, Machete, and Dragged Across Concrete). As the tension builds up, they are all dead set on retrieving their precious cargo at any cost!!!!
Rom-Com veteran director Andy Tennant gets behind the camera for this independent suspense thriller. They take a very simple concept and main location but make it interesting with it’s dangerous situations. It takes a few characters, it turns it into a intense game of cat and mouse. Isabelle Fuhrman is great as Laurie Saltair runs a small secluded storage unit. She gets screwed over by a co-worker and she’s forced to work instead of going to her planned vacation. She gets a suspicious request from someone that doesn’t match the owner of the suggested storage unit. She’s forced to investigate it after turning away the mysterious stranger trying to get in. She finds a trapped man inside of it. Veteran actor Don Johnson is top notch as Jules in Unit 234. He’s trying to get access to a specific storage unit but he gets denied after his story and identity doesn’t match up. He clearly has his agenda here but he’s not able to fool Laurie so he has to go to the next level to get what he wants. Jack Huston is real solid as the unknown Clayton. He is found stuck inside the requested storage unit. He is considered the unfortunate victim from Laurie when she gets dragged into this disaster. The rest of the supporting cast includes James DuMont (Jurassic World), Christopher James Baker (Ozark), Juvian Marquez (Stash), Manny Galan (Wu-Tang: An American Saga), Anirudh Pisharody (9-1-1), Jenna Z. Alvarez (KillHer), Jason Altman (Orange Is the New Black), and Rosemberg Salgado (Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman). Unit 234 uses it’s smaller concept and storage locations wisely. The script hits you with some surprises and unexpected twists once everything comes together. It adds some backstory and some hidden motivations to it after it remains suspensful between the few focused on roles here. It’s much better than expected, the acting really drives these dark scenarios especially towards it’s finale. Unit 234 proves that you don’t need a huge budget or ambitious concept to make a quality thriller. It’s definitely worth checking out sometime, RECOMMENDED!!!!
