Trench 11 DVD Review (RLJE Films)
Trench 11 is a 2017 horror film co-written & directed by Leo Scherman (Howie Do It, Scare Tactics, Bizarre Murders, & The Carbonaro Effect). A highly contagious biological weapon, created by German forces in WWI is discovered by Allied troops as they explore an abandoned underground bunker. Lt. Berton (played by: Rossif Sutherland from Reign, King, Catastrophe, & Dead Before Dawn) is a tunneler who gets loaned out to Maj. Jennings (played by: Ted Atherton from Max Payne, Hollywoodland, The Border, & Killjoys) & Dr. Priest (played by: Charlie Carrick from Reign, Cedar Cove, The Borgias, & Angelique’s Isle). Realizing they need to contain & destroy the threat, their mission becomes a fight for survival when one of their own is infected by the deadly parasite & begins to violently attack them. The soldiers now need to not only save themselves, but must stop the outbreak before it spreads to the rest of the world. Reiner (played by: Robert Stadlober from Engel & Joe, Enemy at the Gates, Crazy, & Summer Storm) will do anything to keep his creation around!!!!
Trench 11 has a very claustrophobic & dark atmosphere to it. A group of soldiers are on a mysterious mission that ends up being a disaster. Science gone wrong with people getting into situations where they have no control over. As time goes on, everything gets worse & it becomes a living nightmare. It’s a smaller film that uses a few locations to create an isolated & suspenseful journey into paranoia. Sound familiar? Yes, it’s been done before but this feature put it’s own spin on it. It’s well written & the cast is pretty damn good here. Besides the 3 leads mentioned above the supporting crew which includes Karine Vanasse (Revenge), Shaun Benson (Channel Zero), Luke Humphrey (Slasher), Jeff Strome (Goon), John B. Lowe (The Butterfly Effect), Andrew Cecon (Silent Night), & Adam Hurtig (Curse of Chucky & Cult of Chucky) elevated the entire production. I really liked the ending, it was tense & the build up was a great set up for it. This was definitely better than expected, RECOMMENDED for any independent horror or film fan!!!!
Let’s talk about the DVD presentation from RLJE Films! This (2.35:1) transfer actually looks better than what you would think considering it’s low budget. The cinematography fits the tone of the feature, it’s real dark & gloomy. It has a nice style to it & it goes with the closed off setting for this. The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 has a nice kick to it & it stands out during the suspenseful scenes. The score helps all of that come together & it’s one of the best things about this track. It also has English SDH for the German dialogue in the film. There’s no extras on this disc. It’s available everywhere right now, you should check this out!!!!
