The World We Knew is a 2020 crime horror film directed by Matthew Benjamin Jones (Over and Over and Mirror #1) and Luke Skinner (Over and Over, Mirror #1, and A Painter’s Life). It was written by Matthew Benjamin Jones (Little Deaths, The Field, and A Painter’s Life) and Kirk Lake (Paradise Lost?, Piercing Brightness, and Radio Mania: An Abandoned Work). It was executive produced by James Buchanan (Redcon-1, The Last Jacobite, Autumn Leaves, and It’s a Wasteful Life). After a job goes wrong, six armed robbers which includes Barker (played by: Struan Rodger from Kill List, Stardust, Chariots of Fire, and Game of Thrones), Carpenter (played by: Finbar Lynch from Child 44, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Rawhead Rex, and Game of Thrones), Gordon (played by: Johann Myers from The Medallion, Black Hawk Dawn, The Bank Job, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and The Lost City of Z), Stoker (played by: Kirk Lake from Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories, Life, and The Personal History of David Copperfield), HP (played by: Simon Rhodes from Charismata, Screwed, Professor T, and Beware the Trojan Horse), and Poe (played by: Alexander Wells) must spend a single night at a deserted safe house. During their stay their troubled pasts come back to haunt them. What is real and what is the product of their tormented minds???? The World We Knew is a crime and a horror hybrid. It’s kinda if Reservoir Dogs had a supernatural approach added to it. It’s well written and it depends on one main location so it feels very isolated which adds to it’s tense atmosphere. It was directed by the duo Matthew Benjamin Jones and Luke Skinner who only did shorts before this so it’s their full length feature debut behind the camera. The World We Knew is packed with talent for it’s lead roles. Veterans Struan Rodger, Finbar Lynch, and Johann Myers elevate this smaller heist gone wrong production. The criminal act wasn’t even the worst part because they just stepped into a even bigger nightmare. Each character has their own personality which includes the fearless leader, the voice of reason, the businessman, the wild card, the unlucky one, and the rookie. The rest of the cast includes Simon Rhodes, Alexander Wells, Kirk Lake, Philip Hancock (Spit MacPhee), and Mat Harvey (The Blueblack Hussar). The World We Knew has plenty of suspense and thrills as it goes on. The mystery keeps building and it draws the audience in even more. The World We Knew has it’s bloodshed and aftermath of a violent event. It’s not full of gore or anything like that, it’s more psychological and haunting than anything. This independent production is smart with it’s limited budget, one key spot and every other department gets the best possible efforts. It’s a character study that focuses on it’s interactions and these criminals dealing with their history while waiting for this job to be fully secured. They try to solve whos the one that tipped off the police and made it a botch. They are all taking orders from an unknown figure that’s their boss. It has the dreadful vibes that are possibly coming apart at any time which keeps it rather interesting. The World We Knew showcases two of my favorite genres mixed together with a top notch screenplay that drives it to a complicated situation, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Bayview Entertainment! This 1080p (2.40:1) transfer is really good for such a simple setup. This is what independent should be like, it doesn’t take a massive cash flow because talent will make it happen. The World We Knew displays skills put to the test when the resources are not there but it still delivers. It has an English PCM 5.1 track on the disc. This isn’t action packed or non stop violence despite it’s concept but it has some moments. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the tension is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. The only extras on this home video release is a variety of “Trailers” related to Bayview Entertainment. This is a M.O.D (BD-R) home video release.
