The Wolf of Snow Hollow Blu Ray Review (Warner Bros)

The Wolf of Snow Hollow is a 2020 comedy horror film written & directed by Jim Cummings (Thunder Road, No Floodwall Here, Still Life, Minutes, & The Beta Test). It’s produced by Kathleen Grace (The Fourth Door, Final Space, Two Sides, & I Ship It) & Matt Miller (Stargate Origins, Werewolves Within, Beast Beast, & Greener Grass). The budget was $2 million & it grossed $185,026 at the box office during it’s limited theatrical run. Terror grips a small mountain town as bodies are discovered after each full moon. Stuck dealing with all the stressed locals plus co-workers which includes Detective Julia Robson (played by: Riki Lindhome from Knives Out, Under the Silver Lake, Hell Baby, & The Last House on the Left) & PJ Palfrey (played by: Jimmy Tatro from Stuber, The King of Staten Island, Super Troopers 2, & 22 Jump Street).Losing sleep, raising a teenage daughter Jenna (played by: Chloe East from Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, Ice, & True Blood), & caring for his ailing father/boss Sheriff Hadley (played by: Robert Forster from Jackie Brown, Twin Peaks, Vigilante, & Mulholland Dr.), officer Marshall (played by: director Jim Cummings from The Block Island Sound, Greener Grass, The Handmaid’s Tale, & 13 Cameras) struggles to remind himself there’s no such thing as werewolves.The Wolf of Snow Hollow is a smaller Warner Bros release in association with Orion Pictures & United Artists releasing. It kinda like Fargo meets The Howling, it’s a great balance of comedy, thriller, family drama, & the werewolf sub-genre. It has been labeled as a horror comedy but honestly it’s more of a thriller with some horror elements thrown in. It has it’s brutal moments but it’s a few & far between, it relies more on the suspense than gore for The Wolf of Snow Hollow. The script was pretty good for the most part but some of the comedy here falls flat & it doesn’t work. Jim Cummings wore lots of hats on this production including being the lead actor here. He was decent & I’ve definitely seen worse when it comes to acting but I wish he would have went for someone else for this important role. I think he would have been better as a cameo or supporting character to be real. When it came to the serious moments, I think he struggled a little bit. Robert Forster was great in his last role before he tragically passed away. He was a legend & he could elevate any material when he was on the screen. He made others better around him & especially on something like this. This had a few familiar faces in the supporting cast like Riki Lindhome & Jimmy Tatro. It had impressive special fx, music, & production design. The best thing about The Wolf of Snow Hollow is the last 20 minutes & finale. It really picks up for the last act & I wish more of the feature was like that. It has a decent twist & it’s very intense. It could have been better with a few changes but overall I thought it was a solid entry when it comes to the werewolf sub-genre plus it’s different from most of them, RECOMMENDED!!!!Let’s talk about the high definition presentation from Warner Bros! This 1080p (1.85:1) looks good on blu ray but do not expect reference quality for this lower budget feature. It has that small town atmosphere & it’s like it’s own character in this. It has a nice winter vibe to it which helps the visuals really stand out at times.  The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track has a nice boost to it especially when it comes to the music. All of the dialogue is very clean & the suspense is elevated here. It has English SDH & Spanish subtitles.Let’s discuss the special features from Warner Bros! “The Impetus” is a little over a minute. It has interviews with Jim Cummings, Robert Forster, & Jimmy Tatro. They chat about the main characters & his problems besides dealing with a werewolf. “Working with Jim Cummings” is a little over a minute. It has interviews with various cast members & crew from the production. They praise the director, writer, & actor here. They go over his talents & working with him on this. “The Story and the Genre” is a little over 4 minutes. It has interviews with various cast members & crew from the production.  They chat about the werewolf sub-genre. They talk about how different this one is compared to the others. “The Design of the Werewolf” is a little over 5 minutes. It shows them putting together the werewolf for the feature. It shows the training for it. It’s a cool inside look into the monster for the movie. It also includes a slipcover & a digital code. It’s available right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
