The Nice Guys 4K Review (Warner Bros.)

The Nice Guys is a 2016 crime film co-written and directed by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, The Predator, Edge, and the Lethal Weapon franchise). It was co-written by Anthony Bagarozzi (Road House, Doc Savage, Play Dirty, and Jekyll). It was produced by Joel Silver (Weird Science, House on Haunted Hill, Hudson Hawk, Beverly Hills Cop III, 48 Hrs franchise, Lethal Weapon franchise, Die Hard franchise, The Matrix franchise, Predator franchise, Commando, Road House, and Tales from the Crypt). It was originally written as a television series. The budget was $50,000,000 and it grossed $71,261,763 worldwide at the box office. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (played by: Ryan Gosling from Drive, Remember the Titans, Blue Valentine, The Fall Guy, Blade Runner 2049, Only God Forgives, The Place Beyond the Pines, and The Believer) and hired muscle Jackson Healy (played by: Russell Crowe from L.A. Confidential, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Man of Steel, Robin Hood, Virtuosity, 3:10 to Yuma, and American Gangster) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl. It leads them to the unrelated death of a porn star. During their gritty investigation, the unlikely duo uncovers a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to all the highest circles of power in California!!!! Shane Black is the master of the buddy cop sub-genre and The Nice Guys is another high quality addition to his already impressive resume. The script is top notch, it has a nice mix of action and dark humor with some twists. Ryan Gosling is hilarious as Holland March, he never has any luck and he’s forced to take scummy jobs to take care of his daughter. Russell Crowe is great as Jackson Healy, he’s basically just a hired thug. He’s paid to hurt people and make them do things against their will. These two have amazing chemistry together. They start off rough and they are kinda rivals while trying to look into the same person. As they spend more time working on this, they become a pretty good team. The rest of the supporting cast includes Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential), Keith David (They Live), Matt Bomer (Doom Patrol), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), Angourie Rice (Spider-Man franchise), Yaya DaCosta (Chicago Med), Beau Knapp (Death Wish), Lois Smith (Twister), Ty Simpkins (Insidious franchise), Hannibal Buress (Tag), Jack Kilmer (Willow), and Murielle Telio (Paydirt). The Nice Guys is loaded with action, chaos, suspense, violence, mystery, drama, and comedy. Shane Black has his own little world when it comes to his movies. It almost feels like most of his previous projects could be connected at any time. The Nice Guys is beyond entertaining and lots of fun with some really dark moments. It has fantastic replay value to it, it gets better each time that I revisit it. RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Warner Bros Pictures! This 2160p (2.39:1) transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 looks amazing in 4K. It’s a huge upgrade compared to it’s original 2016 home video release. It’s awesome to see more catalog titles get some UHD from the vaults. The Nice Guys already looked great but this pushes it another level. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the UHD. NOTE: It has Dolby Atmos and listed on back but they weren’t on the disc. Luckily, the original audio still sounds great here. It has some chaotic situations that are really elevated here. All of the dialogue is crisp, the suspense is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles. It has the little over 5 minute “Always Bet on Black”. It has interviews with Shane Black, Joel Silver, Anthony Bagarozzi, and the cast. They chat about the legendary writer. They talk about working with him as the director here. It has the little over 6 minute “Worst. Detectives. Ever. Making The Nice Guys”. They go over the history and development of this production.
