The Housemaid Blu Ray Review (Lionsgate)

The Housemaid is a 2025 erotic thriller produced and directed by Paul Feig (Arrested Development, The Office, Nurse Jackie, Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor franchise, Spy, and Last Christmas). It was written by Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Haunting of Molly Hartley, American Zombie, Happily Even After, and The Vampire Diaries). It’s based on the novel from author Freida McFadden. It was produced by Todd Lieberman (War Machine, Robin Hood, Shotgun Wedding, The Fix, Wonder, Beauty Shop, Wild Hogs, The Fighter, and Warm Bodies). The budget was $35,000,000 and it grossed $394,523,548 worldwide at the box office!!!! A twisted world where perfection is an illusion, and nothing is as it seems. Trying to escape her past, Millie Calloway (played by: Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria, The White Lotus, The Handmaid’s Tale, Immaculate, Madame Web, and Anyone But You) accepts a job as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Nina (played by: Amanda Seyfried from Mean Girls, Scoob!, Twin Peaks, Love the Coopers, Ted 2, and Jennifer’s Body) and Andrew Winchester (played by: Brandon Sklenar from Vice, Midway, Drop, The Big Ugly, and 1923). What begins as a dream job quickly unravels into a living nightmare and something far more dangerous. There’s a sexy, seductive game of secrets, scandal, and power behind the Winchesters’ closed doors!!!! The Housemaid makes a return to the erotic thriller sub-genre. This is definitely not your typical Paul Feig film, he’s mainly known for comedy but he tries something different with this one. I appreciate that, it means he’s growing as a filmmaker. I’m not familiar with the original source material for the book at all but the script is much better than expected. It deals with a desperate woman with a shady past that’s just trying to start over. She must get a stable job or she is forced to go back to prison. Amanda Seyfried is beautiful but she’s always been really underrated as a performer. She’s always consistent and I’ve never seen a bad performance from her so far, she has a nice variety when it comes to her career. She’s great as the paranoid Nina in this. I loved what they did with her character, very unpredictable. Sydney Sweeney damn near looks perfect. She has one of the best bodies in the industry and she automatically grabs your attention when she’s on the screen. She is very hit or miss when it comes to acting but I tend to like her more than most critics. This is one of her better performances as the troubled Millie Calloway. They actually dressed her down at first. They made her look a little nerdy on purpose but she becomes her true self when she gets more comfortable here. It’s a complicated role, she proves that she has the talent if the material is good enough in this. Brandon Sklenar is the biggest surprise as Andrew Winchester. I’ve seen him a few things over the years but I thought he was really good in drop and he’s even better here. Andrew has many different sides to him in The Housemaid. The development really elevates his presence especially towards the end. These 3 have solid chemistry together and it creates a twisted love triangle between them all. The rest of the supporting cast includes Elizabeth Perkins (Big), Don DiPetta (Green Book), Lamar Baucom-Slaughter (Law and Order), Michele Morrone (Subservience), Indiana Elle (Ted), Megan Ferguson (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Alaina Surgener (No Hard Feelings), Sophia Bunnell (Little Brother), Ellen Adair (Billions), and Matt Walton (One Life to Live). I wasn’t expecting a erotic thriller to hit the mainstream but I’m here for it. It has some really sexy moments especially with the bombshell Sydney Sweeney so that alone makes me this worth checking out. The Housemaid flips it on the audience, it goes a completely different direction when it gets deeper into the plot. It’s full of surprises and it keeps you on your toes for the rest of it’s shocking finale. It has the atmosphere of the low budget craze of the popular sleazy sub-genre from the 90’s but in a much bigger production. It took a minute to build up but it all exploded when these 3 main characters collide. It’s cool seeing this pushed to a bugger crowd because it screams direct to video. It has suspense, tension, psychopaths, and nudity so it delivers. It’s better than I thought it would be, The Housemaid is much more than it’s reputation.
