The Basement is a 2018 horror thriller written/produced/directed by Brian M. Conley (Day of the Dead) and Nathan Ives (Day of the Dead, A Christmas in New York, and Somewhere In The Middle). It was produced by Mark Heidelberger (Harsh Times, Chopper, Take the Night, Mississippi Murder, and Ninja Apocalypse). It grossed $4,286 at the box office during it’s limited theatrical run. Craig Owen (played by: Cayleb Long from The Blacklist, The Intern, and The Equalizer) is randomly abducted and he wakes up in a isolated basement trapped. Craig’s wife Kelly (played by: Mischa Barton from The O.C., The Sixth Sense, Notting Hill, Neighbours, Spree, and The Toy Box) tries to locate him while he’s missing but will she find something bad about her partner? His captor Bill Anderson (played by: Jackson Davis from Lonelygirl15, Shameless, CSI, and Hidden Canyons) is a demented serial killer who wishes to reenact his own experiences from past trauma. As Bill tortures Craig, he shows off a number of multiple personas, all while Craig tries desperately to find a way into Bill’s pathology in order to escape from this madness happening inside the basement!!!! I understand why it was called The Basement but that’s a very generic title and there’s already so many with that same name so this one unfortunately gets lost in the mix because of it. I definitely can see this as a love it or hate it type of feature for it’s concept but luckily it had a talented cast so it works. The script is more of a suspense thriller and psychological drama rather than a straight up horror feature. The Basement honestly kinda reminded me of an independent version of Split with it’s main villain having all kinds of different personalities when he’s torturing his unlucky victim. Jackson Davis is very impressive as psychopath Bill Anderson. My favorite was the evil clown. I enjoyed most of the multiple personalities from the serial killer but there’s a few that were basically the same which didn’t really work during their parts. Cayleb Long is decent as Craig Owen. His role is a little bit of a mystery but you learn more as his torture continues. Mischa Barton is clearly the biggest name when it comes to The Basement and she gets top billing on most of the promotional material for this but she has a smaller role. She’s mainly on the phone looking for her husband but she’s still solid here and she’s very important towards the end. The rest of the supporting cast includes Bailey Anne Borders (The 5th Wave), Tracie Thoms (Death Proof), Kareem J. Grimes (Jarhead), Marsha Vassilevskaia (Wolf Creek 2), Jessica Sonneborn (Bloody Bloody Bible Camp), and Sarah Nicklin (Brotherhood). Jackson Davis and Cayleb Long have good chemistry so it helps their dynamic, it’s damn near two person film for the most part. The Basement keeps it interesting with a few surprises here and there. It’s a very ambitious project for such a low budget but I appreciate what they were able to execute with their limited resources. I enjoyed it so much more than expected to be honest, it has potential for other stories with this crazy villain and I’d like to see that in the future. The Basement stands out more than your typical dark suspense thriller. It’s very entertaining once it really kicks in. It’s currently streaming on Tubi if you are in interested. RECOMMENDED!!!! This 1080p (2:39.1) transfer looks better than expected on blu ray especially for it’s very simple and main basement location where all the torture takes place for it. The production design, many costume changes, and the main location add to it’s chaotic vibe. They were smart with what they had to work with for this. It has a English: Dolby Digital 5.1 and English: Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks on the disc. The audio is good but it’s not a really explosive type of production. All of the dialogue is very clean, the suspense is elevated, and the music has a solid boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an almost 9 minute “Alternate Opening”. It has a little over 4 minute “Exclusive Music Video” from Thrown Into Exile for the movie. It has various Uncork’D “Trailers” on here. This is a M.O.D (BD-R) home video release.
