The Alto Knights Blu Ray Review (Warner Bros.)

The Alto Knights is a 2025 crime film produced and directed by Barry Levinson (Good Morning Vietnam, Bugsy, Diner, Rain Man, Sleepers, Wag the Dog, Disclosure, Bandits, The Wizard of Lies, and The Natural). It was written by Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas, Casino, City Hall, and Vegas). It’s based on the true story of organized crime. It was produced by Irwin Winkler (Goodfellas, Rocky franchise, Creed franchise, The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Mechanic, and Raging Bull). The budget was $45,000,000 and it grossed $9,503,664 worldwide at the box office. Two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses Frank Costello (played by: Robert De Niro from Goodfellas, Casino, Cape Fear, The Godfather Part II, The Deer Hunter, Jackie Brown, and Raging Bull) and Vito Genovese (played by: Robert De Niro from Heat, Mean Streets, The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in America, The Untouchables, A Bronx Tale, and Taxi Driver) as they vie for control of the city’s streets. They both want the power by any means necessary which causes a brutal war. Once the best of friends in the past. All kinds of petty jealousies and a fatal series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia forever!!!! Unfortunately, The Alto Knights didn’t do great at the box office and it’s kinda already been forgotten at this point. It’s a real shame because it’s honestly one of the best films of the year so far. It was written by crime legend Nicholas Pileggi that brought us such classics as Goodfellas and Casino. He’s able to put all the major events into this feature without dragging everything out. The legendary Robert De Niro made his impact in cinema with several high quality gangster and mob movies so it’s nice to see him back at it. He’s been doing lots of comedies over the last few years so it’s refreshing to see this and The Irishman added to his iconic resume. He gives two of his best performances in awhile in dual roles. He’s completely different with each one, both men had their own style and vibe to them. Television veterans Debra Messing (Will and Grace, The Wedding Date, Seinfeld, and NYPD Blue) and Kathrine Narducci (The Sopranos, A Bronx Tale, Power, and Witness to the Mob) are the women in both of these dangerous men’s lives. They add more humanity to these complicated members of organized crime. Former Sopranos star Michael Rispoli (Death to Smoochy, The Juror, Rounders, Snake Eyes, and Kick-Ass) is great as Murder Inc’s own Albert Anastasia. The rest of the supporting cast includes Matt Servitto (The Sopranos), Louis Mustillo (The Sopranos), Cosmo Jarvis (Warfare), James Ciccone (The Deuce), Joe Bacino (The Sopranos), Wallace Langham (The Chocolate War), Ed Amatrudo (Drop Zone), and Brian Scolaro (Godfather of Harlem). The Alto Knights has a solid mix of violence, drama, suspense, and crime. Usually, Frank Costello was always a side or smaller character in all those other Lucky Luciano, Bugsy Siegel, and Meyer Lansky projects over the years so it’s cool to see him as the lead role in this. The prosthetics and special fx are top notch turning De Niro into two total opposites when it comes to the Mob. It has some of other more known criminals pop up in this. I don’t understand why it got more than a few harsh reviews during it’s release. It’s everything that you would want for something like this. You can’t go wrong with a Robert De Niro and Nicholas Pileggi collaboration plus with the talented Barry Levinson behind the camera. The Alto Knights has a organic flow and smooth pace to it. This definitely the most underrated movie of the year. I’m hoping it gets a bigger audience on home video because it deserves more appreciation. It’s currently streaming on Max if you are curious about it, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Warner Bros Pictures! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer looks amazing in HD. It’s a shame that it didn’t get a 4K but I’m not surprised considering it flopped in theaters unfortunately. It’s a visual treat and a period piece that captures the time this true crime went down back in the day. It has sharp stylish cinematography and high quality production design. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, English: Dolby Digital 5.1, French: Dolby Digital 5.1, and Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks on the disc. The audio really shines during the violence and chaotic situations. All of the dialogue is crisp, the tension is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH, French, Spanish, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Flemish, Norwegian, and Swedish subtitles. The Alto Knights is one of the better technical home video releases so far. There’s no special features here. It does have a digital code. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
