The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo: Complete Series DVD Review (Warner Bros.)

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo is a 1985 animated television series was directed by Arthur Davis (The Jetsons), Oscar Dufau (The Smurfs), Tony Love (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Don Lusk (The Addams Family), Ray Patterson (Super Friends), Rudy Zamora (The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show), and Alan Zaslove (Darkwing Duck). It was executive produced by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (Scooby-Doo franchise, Tom and Jerry franchise, The Flintstones franchise, The Jetsons franchise, The Smurfs franchise, Godzilla, and Yogi the Bear franchise). They made a follow up movie to this in 2019 under the title ‘Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost”. Daphne (played by: Heather North from the Scooby-Doo franchise and Paradise Bay), Shaggy (played by: Casey Kasem from the Scooby-Doo franchise, Plastic Man, Battle of the Planets, Super Friends, The Transformers, and Sesame Street), and Scooby-Doo (played by: Don Messick from the Scooby-Doo franchise, Yogi franchise, The Jetsons, Spider-Man, The Transformers, and The Smurfs) are on the difficult case for ghosts, real ghosts this time, 13 of the world’s meanest most evil ghosts to be exact. They were all once banned to an enchanted Chest of Demons of eternity, all 13 spirits are now free again to wreak havoc on the world and only Scooby-Doo can recapture them. He’s the one who accidently opened the dangerous chest and let them all out. Mystery Inc is joined by Flim-Flam (played by: Susan Blu from Curious George franchise, Transformers franchise, Toxic Crusaders, The Smurfs, Friday the 13th: The New Blood, and Jem) and Vincent van Ghoul (played by: Vincent Price from House on Haunted Hill, The Last Man on Earth, Witchfinder General, Theater of Blood, Madhouse, and Edward Scissorhands), the ambitious gang causes all kinds of mayhem hunting these bad ghosts around the world!!!! The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo is personally one of my favorite Scooby-Doo television shows. They definitely changed a decent amount when it came to this iconic universe. It’s weird without Fred or Velma but it still works. I always loved how horror themed 13 Ghosts was back in the day. It’s a little more darker than typical mystery from this group. It has some sharp dialogue and excellent development. It’s well written plus it’s packed with all kinds of creative villains especially Maldor and Zomba. Scooby-Doo veterans Casey Kasem, Don Messick, Heather North are all top notch in their iconic roles. Another regular cast member of the Scooby-Doo universe shows up here as a different characters than he usually plays. Frank Welker has portrayed both Shaggy and Scooby in so many different projects over the years but he’s does a variety of roles for The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo. Scooby-Doo familiar B.J. Ward also shows in this darker cartoon as a different character that she’s usually known for in this wacky world. Vincent Price as Vincent van Ghoul steals the show for 13 Ghosts. He was the main reason why I was so excited about this TV series back in the day. He’s still the best thing about this entire cartoon. This horror icon has a blast with this mysterious character. The rest of the supporting cast includes Susan Blu, Peter Cullen (Transformers franchise), Phil Hartman (Saturday Night Live), Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Richard Erdman (Tora! Tora! Tora!), Les Tremayne (The War of the Worlds), Russi Taylor (Mickey Mouse franchise), John Stephenson (The Transformers), Michael Rye (Super Friends), Robert Ridgely (Boogie Nights), Alan Oppenheimer (Ghostbusters), Hamilton Camp (Joe Dirt), Marshall Efron (The Smurfs), Patricia Elliott (One Life to Live), Linda Gary (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe), Alice Hirson (Revenge of the Nerds), Marilyn Lightstone (Heavy Metal), Bob Holt (Gremlins), Arte Johnson (Munchie), and Kenneth Mars (The Little Mermaid). The voice acting for this horror themed cartoon were great for the most part. I wasn’t a big fan of Flim-Flam, mainly just annoying and honestly didn’t add much to 13 Ghosts. I know Scrappy Doo gets all kinds of hate but I thought the role was a nice addition to this. It’s much more toned down then usual and not super over the top. Scooby-Doo cracks me up with some of it’s mysteries and twists, they were pretty obvious even as a kid. There’s a few that actually impressive for The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo. It still has quality replay value to it. It’s one of the more original and unique versions of this classic franchise. It’s a blast, I’m glad this 2 disc DVD set finally got re-released again to the public. I would love a possible blu ray upgrade someday but it might not be possible considering it’s overall quality but we’ll see. It does have a pretty cool bonus feature on this DVD set. It has the 22 minute episode 7 “Don’t Feed the Animals” from Season 1 of 2006’s Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue television series directed by Jeff Allen.
