Sting Blu Ray Review (Well Go USA)

Sting is a 2024 horror film written, edited, and directed by Kiah Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood franchise and Nekrotronic). It was produced by Adrian Politowski (Mandy, The Artist, Die in a Gun Fight, Mortal, Say your Prayers, The Numbers Station, Backdraft 2, I Kill Giants, Revenge, and Guns Akimbo). It grossed $2,334,857 worldwide at the box office. After raising an unnervingly talented spider called Sting in secret from everyone around her, the 12-year-old Charlotte (played by: Alyla Browne from The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Nine Perfect Strangers, Furiosa, and Children of the Corn) must face the facts about her mysterious pet. She must fight for her family’s survival which includes Ethan (played by: Ryan Corr from Wolf Creek 2, The Water Diviner, Cleverman, In Limbo, and House of the Dragon), Heather (played by: Penelope Mitchell from Hellboy, Star Trek: Picard, Hemlock Grove, and R.I.P.D 2), and her baby brother Liam when the once-charming creature rapidly transforms into a giant and evil flesh-eating monster!!!!Bug and Spider horror has always been very hit or miss. Sting is one of the better entries in that sub-genre. It keeps you guessing and curious about the vicious creature. It’s a nice build up, lots tension, suspense, and thrills. It doesn’t show much of Sting until everything goes to hell here. One of the biggest flaws usually when it comes to this type of movie is the visual and special fx but it’s way better than expected in this. It has some awesome, gross out, and creative practical gore. It looks more impressive than most mainstream horror productions. If you have arachnophobia, this one is going to make it worse for you. Sting has a creepy isolated feel to it in it’s main apartment building setting. The script displays some weird people that are all dealing a crazy situation. As time goes on, the main family is falling apart as they struggle to survive. Alyla Browne as Charlotte is top notch. It’s one of the best child performances that I’ve seen in awhile. She’s an odd kid that’s still hurt from her real father leaving her life. She tries her best to accept her new stepfather but it’s just not connecting. Ryan Corr is great as Ethan, he wants to fit in this family but he still feels an outsider at times. He’s a struggling writer that takes care of the apartment building so his family has somewhere to live while he’s trying to figure out his upcoming book. Penelope Mitchell as Heather is the glue for the family and she tries to keep everything connected while it’s threatening to go away. The chemistry between the three leads in Sting were excellent. It has a solid supporting cast that includes Jermaine Fowler (Coming 2 America), Noni Hazlehurst (Candy), Robyn Nevin (The Matrix franchise), Danny Kim (Born to Spy), and Silvia Colloca (Van Helsing). Jermaine Fowler as Frank steals every single scene that he’s in, he provides some hilarious comedy relief. Sting has a good flow and pace to it, there’s never a dull moment. It has quality replay value to it, I definitely see myself watching this all the time. It’s one of the more underappreciated and underrated horror movies of the year. This Australian production is a huge surprise. Everyone needs to watch this one, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Well Go USA! This 1080p (1.85:1) transfer looks amazing on blu ray. The stylish cinematography, visual production design, high quality fx, and it’s main apartment location really shine here. Everything sounds fantastic when it comes to the audio here. It has a few different audio options which includes English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English: Dolby Digital 2.0 on the disc. All of the dialogue is crisp, the spider madness is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH and French subtitles. “Creating the Monster” is a little over 6 minutes. It has interviews with the cast and crew. Kiah Roache-Turner chats about wanting to make something he was afraid of. He says spiders are one of his biggest fears so that’s why he did this project. They talk about the fx from the production. They bring up that it’s nice to do old school practical fx instead of CGI here. It focuses on some puppeteering and it has some cool behind the scenes footage. “The Director’ is a little over 6 minutes. It has interviews with the cast and crew from Sting. They chat about the director behind this horror feature. They show their appreciation for the filmmaker. Turner said this had all kinds of personal elements in it. It has some behind the scenes stuff thrown in here. “The Cast” is a little over 7 minutes. It has interviews with the cast and crew. They chat about the casting here for the main characters. They talk about working with each other for it. They show appreciation for their work in Sting. It has a “Trailer” for Sting and some other Well Go USA “Trailers”. It comes with a slipcover.
