Soul Reaper Blu Ray Review (Well Go USA)

Soul Reaper (aKa Malam Pencabut Nyawa and Respati) is a 2024 supernatural horror film co-written and directed by Sidharta Tata (Tunnel, Hitam, Ali Topan, Waktu Maghrib franchise, Sakaratul Maut, Zona Merah, and Quarantine Tales). It was co-written by Ambaridzki Ramadhantyo (Bad Guys, Tunnel, and Cigarette Girl). It’s based on the novel from author Ragiel JP. It was produced by Shanty Harmayn (Bad Guys, My Annoying Brother, Lara Ati, The East, Comedy Island Indonesia, Impetigore, and Trese). It grossed $743,037 at the box office during it’s limited theatrical run. Endless nightmares of extremely violent deaths keep haunting Respati (played by: Devano Danendra from Antares, Zone Merah, My Nerd Girl, Perayaan Mati Rasa, Dear Nathan: Hello Salma, and Bad Boys vs Crazy Girls) until he realizes they’re not just dreams. As the horrifying visions start manifesting in reality, he rushes to stop all of the upcoming tragedies before they actually happen. His cursed dreams, uncovering a sinister force at play from a gruesome witch. Fate is written in nightmares, and waking up might not be enough to escape death!!!! Soul Reaper is being called the Indonesian version of A Nightmare of Elm Street. It’s very different from it and don’t expect a Freddy rip off here. It definitely has the influence of the classic slasher plus Dreamscape but it’s not exactly that. It’s very supernatural and it’s an interesting concept, it has it’s own unique vibe to it. Devano Danendra as Respati has special abilities to enter people’s dreams but his gift is becoming a nightmare once things get worse. Keisya Levronka (Lara Ati, Five Friends, Jingga Dan Senja, My Nerd Girl, and Mozachiko) as Wulan is the girl that he’s trying to save from her tormented thoughts while she’s asleep. The rest of the supporting cast includes Mikha Hernan (My Ice Girl), Budi Ros (The Haunted Hotel), Fajar Nugra (Pamali: The Corpse Village), Ratu Felisha (Clown of the Dead), Kiki Narendra (Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion), Maychelina Anis (The Redemption of Sin), Kukuh Riyadi (Dosa Musyrik), and Eko Budi Antara (Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca). Soul Reaper adds some different to the sub-genre. It’s a nice mix of ghost, witch, suspense, and traumatic nightmares. Respati feels cursed after dealing with his powerful gift. Everyone close to him ends up in some kind of trouble. It doesn’t go far cheap jump scares and it just keeps hitting you with all kinds of crazy situations but nothing feels forced here. It has a solid build up to all the madness. It has a creepy atmosphere and it really captures outcasts trying to survive an unbelievable threat. The visual and special fx are fantastic in Soul Reaper. This was a nice surprise and I hope it gets some more attention in the states, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Well Go USA! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer looks excellent for it’s HD debut in the states. It’s stylish cinematography and nightmare visuals really stand out here. It has a few different audio options which includes has Indonesian: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Indonesian: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 tracks on the disc. The audio is really pops when it’s in nightmare mode in this. All of the dialogue is crisp, the tension is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has the little over a minute “Stunt Choreography”. The stunt coordinator chats about his experiences here. He goes over working with the director and he brings up some scenes from it. It has the little over a minute “Makeup Fx”. The fx artist chats about the main villain and her look for the film. It has the almost 3 minute “Set Design” with Dream Realm and Bedroom. Production designer goes over the several different locations and dreams for Soul Reaper. It has the “Trailer” for Soul Reaper and various Well Go USA related “Trailers”. It’s a professionally made on demand BD-R. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!!
