Sniper: The Last Stand DVD Review (Sony)

Sniper: The Last Stand is a 2025 direct to video action film directed by Danishka Esterhazy (Slumber Party Massacre, The Banana Splits Movie, Killer Body Count, The Disappearance of Cari Farver, I Was Lorena Bobbitt, and Level 16). It was written by Sean Wathen (Escape the Field). It was produced by Lance Samuels (Lake Placid: Legacy, Critters Attack!, Leprechaun Returns, Slumber Party Massacre, The Banana Splits Movie, Generation Kill, and Strike Back). This is the 11th movie in this action franchise!!!! To stop a ruthless arms dealer Ryker Kovalov (played by: Arnold Vosloo from Hard Target, G.I. Joe franchise, Blood Diamond, Buried Alive, Darkman franchise, 24, Jack Ryan, and The Mummy franchise) from unleashing a deadly superweapon, legendary sniper Brandon Beckett (played by: Chad Michael Collins from the Sniper franchise, Lake Placid 2, Creepshow, Extinct, Company of Heroes, and Room 33) and Agent Zero (played by: Ryan Robbins from the Sniper franchise, Sanctuary, Kingdom Hospital, Walking Tall, Riverdale, Arrow, and Passengers) are deployed to Costa Verde to lead a group of elite soldiers against an unrelenting militia. Beckett faces his newest challenge by training these younger soldiers so now he’s giving orders rather than receiving them. Both their time and ammo are running very low in a race to save all of humanity, the team must overcome all dangerous odds just to survive this brutal mission!!!! The Sniper franchise is current longest running action series in a long time. I can’t believe that they have made 11 of these so far but they are obviously doing good to keep producing them. The original lead was the talented Tom Berenger for the first 3 features then he came back for 3 more. Then veteran character actor Billy Zane appeared in 4 of them including the original. Part 4 which was under the name Sniper: Reloaded in 2011 was the first sequel to feature the new lead Chad Michael Collins for the franchise since then. He’s done 8 of these explosive movies so far as the skilled shooter Brandon Beckett. He’s went from trainee to trainer for The Last Stand. He’s always been a natural born leader so it’s time to prove it again. Ryan Robbins returns as Agent Zero for the 4th time in the Sniper universe. He has a different vibe and dynamic compared to Beckett so it works for them as a team. They always have great chemistry together. The best thing about The Last Stand is Arnold Vosloo as the main villain Ryker Kovalov. It’s great to see him in something like this, he’s always a quality bad guy and this Sniper sequel is no different. I feel like he’s been very underrated and underused over the last few years. He’s one of the biggest threats when it comes to all of these adrenaline fueled movies. It’s an interesting counterpart to heroes Beckett and Zero. The rest of the supporting cast includes Sharon Taylor (Cross), Manuel Rodriguez-Saenz (Shazam!), Vusi Kunene (Eye in the Sky), Sizo Mahlangu (Black Sails), Noxolo Dlamini (Death of a Whistleblower), Rob van Vuuren (Slumber Party Massacre), Shamilla Miller (Dead Places), Clayton Evertson (Raised by Wolves), and Kiroshan Naidoo (The Mauritanian). I think director Danishka Esterhazy is a little underrated, I really enjoyed The Banana Splits Movie and I thought the Slumber Party Massacre remake was decent. She does a quality job behind the camera for The Last Stand and adds some style to the Sniper world. These movies have tried some different things over the years which some of them failed miserably but they went back to the basics for this one which always works for this type of film. It’s action packed with lots of violence, it delivers exactly what you expect from this series. It’s one of the better recent sequels for Sniper and the two leads are so locked in as their characters at this point. It’s lots of suspenseful fun and it stays entertaining for the most part. It’s worth checking out if you are into Sniper or this style of movies. I’m really shocked that this popular franchise only got a DVD for it’s home video release considering most of the other films are on Blu Ray. The (2.00:1) transfer is solid in standard definition but I know it would have looked great in actual HD. The English: 5.1 Dolby Digital track is the shining star when it comes to the technical aspects of this DVD. It has English, English SDH, and Spanish subtitles. There’s unfortunately no special features on this disc. The Last Stand is a M.O D. and limited DVD-R instead of being pro pressed from Sony Pictures. I’m hoping it gets a Blu Ray upgrade someday but this is good for now for diehard fans. RECOMMENDED!!!!
