Sinners 4K Review (Warner Bros.)

Sinners is a 2025 horror film written, produced, and directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther franchise, Creed, and Fruitvale Station). It was produced by Sev Ohanian (Judas and the Black Messiah, Ironheart, Creed III, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Fruitvale Station, and Run). The budget was $90,000,000 and it grossed $365,878,513 worldwide at the box office!!!! Twin brothers Smoke (played by: Michael B. Jordan from the Creed franchise, Black Panther franchise, Without Remorse, Fantastic Four, and Just Mercy) and Stack (played by: Michael B. Jordan from Fahrenheit 451, The Wire, Friday Night Lights, Chronicle, and Hardball) are trying to leave their troubled lives behind in the past. They return to their hometown for a fresh start again with a new business set up, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back after all this time!!!! Sinners is kinda like From Dusk Till Dawn meets Hoodlum. It’s a mix of several different sub-genres and it’s a total blast. Director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler puts his own spin on the iconic vampire and horror genres here. The script follows two brothers looking to change their risky lifestyle and finally get back to a more peaceful existence near family. Michael B. Jordan is amazing in dual roles as both Smoke and Stack in Sinners. They enjoyed crime and what it provided for them but they want something different now. Each brother has his own qualities and Jordan gives top notch performances in this. Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee, Hawkeye, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Marvels, and The Edge of Seventeen) as Mary gives her most adult performance in her career so far. I’ve never seen her with a role like this before and she’s not afraid to push it further than usual. She shows that she can do variety if given the right material. She’s the temptress that brings chaos wherever she goes. Jack O’Connell (Eden Lake, 28 Years Later, Money Monster, Ferrari, and 300: Rise of an Empire) shows up as the mysterious Remmick. I’m not very familiar with most of his previous work besides a few things but he was very impressive in this as the outsider that gets rejected. He doesn’t take no for an answer and he comes back on a mission. The rest of the supporting cast includes Delroy Lindo (Clockers), Omar Benson Miller (8 Mile), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Miles Caton, Saul Williams (Slam), Andrene Ward-Hammond (Your Honor), Tenaj L. Jackson (Django Unchained), Dave Maldonado (The Purge), Helena Hu (Watchmen), Yao (The Last Bout), Li Jun Li (Wu Assassins), Sam Malone (American Ultra), Emonie Ellison (Body Cam), Peter Dreimanis (July Talk), Lola Kirke (Winning Time), Nathaniel Arcand (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Jayme Lawson (The Penguin). Sinners is captures the past visually in this period piece. It definitely has a completely different vibe than most vampire features so it’s a refreshing effort for the sub-genre. It has an excellent soundtrack and score which adds to it’s atmosphere. I will say that the singing and dancing scene felt forced and I don’t think it fit the rest of the film. That’s my only real issue with Sinners. It wasn’t shy at all about it’s gore, kills, and violence. I was curious before I watched it on how much they would push it since it was so popular. It’s always awesome to see special fx gets some love and appreciation from a bigger mainstream production like this. The script provided all kinds of entertaining roles in this. It’s a nice balance of different personalities together. I enjoy that it almost feels like two movies put together because it changes up a lot during it’s insanity. It has humor every once in awhile which goes with it’s situations. The fact that Sinners did so well in theaters and it was a hard R rather than some watered down PG-13 bullshit gives me hope for the genre when it comes to studio features. Sinners proves if it’s a high quality experience, it will bring in a large audience no matter what rating it has. It delivers on what you want from something like this. It’s very entertaining and so much fun during it’s survival mode towards the end. This is definitely one of the best of the year so far and it just keeps getting bigger, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Warner Bros Pictures! This 2160p (2.75:1 / 1.78:1) transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 is visually one of the best in 2025. I wished there was more IMAX scenes in this. It has stylish cinematography, high quality production design, interesting locations, and bloody special fx that pop on the screen. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, English: Dolby Digital 5.1, French (Canada): Dolby Digital 5.1, and Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks on the UHD. The audio for Sinners is just as good as it’s sharp picture quality especially when they are in the club. The soundtrack is like it’s own character here. All of the dialogue is crisp, the suspense is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH, French SDH, and Spanish subtitles. It has the little over 32 minute “Dancing with the Devil: The Making of Sinners” directed by Constantine Nasr. It has interviews with various members of the production. It goes over the location and personal motivation for it. It shares some influences including it’s music. I didn’t realize this was such a passion project from Ryan Coogler but this is nice behind the scenes look into Sinners. He talks about his Uncle and what song that really sparked it all. They bring up family and influences that helped create this unique reality. They go over their experiences on it. It has the almost 14 minute “Blues in the Night: The Music of Sinners”. It has interviews with people involved in creating the sound for this universe. It shows appreciation for the Blues genre. They chat about it’s soundtrack and it’s song choices. It’s a detailed look into the sound of Sinners. It has the almost 11 minute “Thicker than Blood: Becoming the Smokestack Twins”. This focuses on the two main characters. They go over identical twins and getting a real backstory for the siblings. Michael B. Jordan talks about giving dual performances in Sinners and he breaks down his roles. He explains some of the differences between Smoke and Stack. They go over wardrobe selections for them. It has the 8 minute “Spirits of the Deep South”. This focuses on Hoodu and it’s history in the south. A expert shares her thoughts on it and Sinners. It has the almost 11 minute “The Wages of Sin: The Creature Effects of Sinners”. This highlights the special fx and gore from the vampire flick. The creative minds behind them give an inside look into their amazing work on this horror movie. It has all kinds of cool behind the scenes footage. The director says after seeing Green Room, he wanted to work with fx artist Michael Fontaine and his team for Sinners. It has 7 “Deleted Scenes” which includes “Farmhouse Dinner”, “Juke Building Montage”, “Sammie and Slim Talk at Piano”, “Slim Plays ‘My Preachin'”, “Mary and Annie Talk About Gumbo”, “Joan Watches Cornbread”, and “Jed Sermon and Steal Away” that’s almost 19 minutes. Sinners has a good amount of extras that prove that it’s still worth collecting physical media. There’s a nice variety of different subjects covered here.
