Shrapnel Blu Ray Review (Shoreline Entertainment / Saban Films)

Shrapnel is a 2023 revenge film directed by William Kaufman (Sinners and Saints, One in the Chamber, Jarhead 3, The Marine 4, Daylight’s End, Warhorse One, and The Hit List). It was written by Chad Law (Lights Out, Til Death Do Us Part, The Flood, Section 8, Beyond the Law, 6 Bullets, and Black Water) and Johnny Walters (Beyond the Law and Desert Dawn). A former Marine Sean Beckwith (played by: Jason Patric from The Lost Boys, Narc, Rush, Speed 2, The Losers, Terrifier 3, and Sleepers) is trying to live a normal life after so much previous chaos during his dark past. He is forced to get help from his old war buddy Max Vohden (played by: Cam Gigandet from Twilight, Never Back Down, Priest, The O.C., Easy A, and Violent Night) face off against the Mexican cartel lead by Victor Garza (played by: Mauricio Mendoza from Seized, NCIS, and Blow) that kidnapped Sean’s daughter Leigh (played by: Teresa Decher from Intruder, Half Brothers, and Cabin Fever). Can these two former dangerous military men take out the mafia to save this girl???? Shrapnel is a very fun and entertaining direct to video revenge feature. It’s from action veteran director William Kaufman and writer Chad Law. Former Marine Sean Beckwith is now a citizen just trying to have a normal life. His daughter vanishes after one mysterious night and he finds out that she’s been snatched up. The script is action packed and it’s just a pure adrenaline rush. It’s awesome to see Jason Patric in a leading role again. He’s great as Sean Beckwith, the desperate father that’s willing to do anything to get his daughter back. He’s a trained killer and this whole situation brings him back to his brutal past. Cam Gigandet as Max Vohden is the former soldier loyal to his commander. He’s the one that really pushes Sean to do whatever it takes to complete his mission. Mauricio Mendoza as Victor Garza is solid as the power hungry crime boss that doesn’t know when to stop. The rest of the supporting cast includes Teresa Decher, Efrain Villa (Better Call Saul), JT Tomangi (Mojave Diamonds), Megan Elisabeth Kelly (Waco: The Aftermath), Vincent E. McDaniel (The Commando), Guillermo Iván (Vantage Point), Kesia Elwin (Miracle at St. Anna), Emily Perry (Bundy Manor), and David DeLao (Better Call Saul). Shrapnel is so much better than it should be. It’s packed with non stop action, chaos, and violence. I lost count when it came to the body count in this. It’s a gruesome revenge film and it definitely delivers. It’s a shame that Jason Patric doesn’t really get much bigger roles because he killed it here. It’s one of the better low budget action and revenge hybrids in awhile, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Shoreline Entertainment and Saban Films! This 1080p (1.78:1) transfer looks fantastic on blu ray. It was nice to see this smaller revenge action movie get an upgrade on home video in the states. All of the action scenes and violence really stand out here. It has a English: Dolby Digital 5.1 track. It’s a loud and explosive movie, the audio is top notch. All of the dialogue is crisp, the vengeance is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. Unfortunately, there’s no special features on this disc. This is a M.O.D (BD-R) home video release. This is available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
