September Blu Ray Review (MGM)

September is a 1987 drama written and directed by Woody Allen (Blue Jasmine, Whatever Works, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Deconstructing Harry, Zelig, The Purple Rose of Cairo, and Midnight in Paris). Two versions of this movie was filmed which included Christopher Walken, Charles Durning, Maureen O’Sullivan, and Sam Shepard for the cast. The original version has never been released. The budget was $10,000,000 and it only grossed $486,434 worldwide at the box office. At a summer house in Vermont, a group of people start having different feelings for each other. They are in relationships but their focus is somewhere else. Howard (played by: Denholm Elliott from Trading Places and the Indiana Jones franchise) can’t get his neighbor Lane (played by: Mia Farrow from Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen) off his mind. She’s all about Peter (played by: Sam Waterston from Law and Order) who’s crushing on the married Stephanie (played by: Dianne Wiest from The Lost Boys and Edward Scissorhands). Diane (played by: Elaine Stritch from 30 Rock and Two’s Company) is with Lloyd (played by: Jack Warden from Used Cars and Problem Child franchise). These couples are at risk with each moment approaching, who will survive this confusing gathering???? September has a fantastic script. This probably sounds awful to say but I loved that Woody Allen just wrote and directed this drama rather than forcing himself as the lead. It’s loaded with all kinds of talent when it comes to it’s little cast. Besides that, it might be one of the most boring films in the history of cinema. It’s full of dysfunction but honestly not much happens with anything here. It’s not even a long feature but it’s so slow that it feels like it goes on for hours. I really wanted to like it but it’s my personal least favorite movie from Woody Allen. It’s hard to watch, there’s really no entertainment or fun in this. It’s a group of pretty horrible people that are not loyal at all. Interiors is a much better film from Allen and it’s similar so I’d recommend that over September anytime. Mia Farrow as Lane is great. She’s fresh from a nervous breakdown and things just keep messing with her life. Dianne Wiest as Stephanie is top notch. She makes everyone around her better in this. The rest of the cast includes Sam Waterston, Denholm Elliott, and Jack Warden. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the performers listed above but I feel like some of the cast members that were on the original unreleased version would have been better here in the final one instead. September definitely has a depressing and sad vibe to it at times and you don’t really feel that good after viewing it. I personally wouldn’t even recommend September for even a one time watch if we are being honest. I’ll never check it out again. I guess if you are fan of the cast or director then it might be worth your 83 minutes. Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from MGM! This 1080p (1.85:1) transfer is the exact same 2017 restoration from Twilight Time. It still looks impressive on blu ray. It’s a massive upgrade compared to the older versions before that. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track on the disc. The audio has always been solid for September. All of the dialogue is very clean the drama is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. There’s no extras on this release. Don’t let the artwork fool you, this is a pro pressed home video release and it’s not a BD-R. It’s available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com!!!!
