Score has become a popular Podcast following this full length feature film. It takes you through the progress of film score development, this fascinating documentary really shows how the start of a few notes on the piano can elevate the most dramatic scenes of a film’s emotional finale. It focuses on some of the most iconic film composers such as James Horner (Braveheart and Titanic), John Williams (Jaws and Star Wars franchise), Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen and Gremlins), Danny Elfman (Batman franchise and Beetlejuice), Hans Zimmer (Batman franchise and The Rock), Howard Shore (The Fly and The Silence of the Lambs), Ennio Morricone (The Dollars Trilogy and The Thing), Randy Newman (Toy Story franchise and Cars franchise), Thomas Newman (The Lost Boys and The Shawshank Redemption), Trent Reznor (The Social Network and Gone Girl), and some of their most known work in the movie business. Score: A Film Music Documentary digs deep into the music world when it comes to movies. It highlights some of the greatest composers of all time here. It talks about their different styles and what films that they worked on that made a huge impact. These guys are some of the most underrated talent when it comes to Hollywood. Their music has changed the industry and it’s made some of the iconic moments even better with their musical addition. This documentary is a cool inside look into the music side of cinema. There’s so much history when it comes to composers and music so I could easily see a sequel being made to this someday. It has all kinds of behind the scenes footage, video clips, and archive interviews also. It has additional exclusive interviews with Leonard Maltin, Christopher Young, Bear McCreary, Tyler Bates, Moby, Quincy Jones, Brian Tyler, Atticus Ross, and many others. I love how personal Score gets, you get to see how some of these scores are created. I’ve always appreciated composers but this feature gives you gives you even more respect for them. I will say that I was shocked that the legendary John Carpenter wasn’t involved in this. It’s currently streaming on Tubi, Freeverse, Plex, Pluto TV, and a few others. This 1080p (1.78:1) transfer looks fantastic on blu ray. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The audio is great here. All of the interviews are crystal clear, the sound is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Matt Schrader. The film maker goes over the documentary with his own thoughts and opinions as it plays. Lots of information and stories shared during this personal audio track. It has a little over 29 minute “Interview” with director James Cameron. He doesn’t hold back here and he gets very technical with his comments. He chats about his collaborations with James Horner and the movies that they worked on. It has a little over 7 minute “Interview” with Bear McCreary. He flexes his hurdy gurdy skills. He goes over the history and digs into his Black Sails music from it. It’s a little over 3 minute “Interview” with Harry Gregson-Williams. He goes over his creative interests and he shows off some music. It’s an almost 2 minute “Interview” with Hans Zimmer. He gets personal on here for this quick chat. It’s an under a minute “Interview” with J. Ralph. Looking for inspiration here. It’s a little over 6 minute “Interview” with Tyler Bates. This is an awesome inside look with the talented composer.
