Scared Shitless Blu Ray Review (Blue Fox Entertainment)

Scared Shitless is a 2024 horror film executive produced and directed by Vivieno Caldinelli (Hotbox, My Pal Satan, Splatalot, Seven Stages to Achieve Eternal Bliss, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and Picnicface). It was executive produced and written by Brandon Cohen (Zaide and Scared Shitless 2021). It’s based on the 2021 short film directed by Mike Fly Fleischhaker. It was executive produced by Steven Kostanski (Astron-6, Father’s Day, Manborg, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Frankie Freako, and Psycho Goreman). A experienced plumber Don (played by: Steven Ogg from Dark Match, The Walking Dead, He Never Died, V/H/S 99, Westworld, The Tick, and Snowpiercer) and his germophobic son Sonny (played by: Daniel Doheny from The Order, Drinkwater, Alex Strangelove, The Package, Lucky Hank, and Day of the Dead) are forced to get their hands dirty to save the residents of an apartment building which includes Professor Robert (played by: Mark McKinney from The Kids in the Hall, Superstore, Superstar, The Ladies Man, and A Night at the Roxbury) after all hell breaks loose. It’s when a genetically engineered, blood-thirsty creature escapes into the plumbing system where no one is safe from this vicious monster!!!! Scared Shitless came out of nowhere, I didn’t hear anything about it until it was released on home video. The title definitely fits this monster movie perfectly. This independent Canadian horror production is one of the biggest surprises of the year so far. Director Vivieno Caldinelli brought some wild visuals to this splatter fest. The script is inspired by the original short written by the same person Brandon Cohen. He gives Scared Shitless a great balance of dark comedy and nasty horror. Lead actor Steven Ogg as Don is the plumber that has to go through hell. He’s just there for a quick and easy job that turns into something completely different and dangerous. As always, Ogg is excellent as the unlikely hero in this. Daniel Doheny is hilarious as the germophobic Sonny that is helping his father do filthy that requires him to get over his own fears from past trauma. His nightmares become a reality when the monster takes over the apartment complex. I really enjoyed the father and son relationship in this. These two had amazing chemistry together. Mark McKinney as the scene stealing Professor Robert is the reason why everyone is fighting for their lives and trapped inside their homes facing pure chaos. The rest of the cast includes Julian Richings (Wrong Turn), Chelsea Clark (Degrassi: Next Class), Marcia Bennett (Chucky), Brynn Godenir (Hell Motel), Donald Tripe (IT), Lorna Wilson (Warehouse 13), and Marty Adams (Saw IV). This reminded me of something that would have been made in the 80’s. I was a little surprised how brutal and gruesome Scared Shitless was. It’s loaded with extreme violence and gore. I loved how they went with old school practical fx for this from the talented Steven Kostanski (In a Violent Nature, IT, Suicide Squad, Clown, Hannibal, Resident Evil: Retribution, and Silent Hill: Revelation) and Mike Hamilton (Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, Firestarter, Curse of Chucky, In a Violent Nature, Psycho Goreman, ABCs of Death 2, and V/H/S/ 94). Hardcore horror fans will love how bloody and crazy this one gets. That’s the best thing about Scared Shitless. It’s awesome to see the monster sub-genre get a quality entry like this because it’s a true rarity these days. It’s a total blast and it’s very entertaining until it’s finale. It’s one of hidden gems that most people didn’t even know existed, do yourself a favor and check it out soon. RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Blue Fox Entertainment! This 1080p (1.85:1) transfer looks way better than expected especially for it’s lower budget. I was very impressed with it’s overall look and style of everything here. It has some slick cinematography, bloody special fx, and it takes full advantage of it’s apartment complex location for it’s visuals. It has a few different audio options which includes English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English: Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks on the disc. The audio definitely delivers when it comes to intense and nasty moments. All of the dialogue is crisp, the chaos is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH and French subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with Vivieno Caldinelli. He calls anyone who listens to a commentary before seeing it previously a weirdo. He mentions that it’s his first attempt at doing an audio track for one of his films. He tells some personal stories from it. He chats about the cast, characters, connections, concept, the script, special fx, and a variety of other subjects related to Scared Shitless. The fx are so damn good here that I really didn’t notice the few CGI moments that he points out. He brings up some easter eggs from their influences during the film. If you want to learn more about this independent horror production then this track is definitely worth listening to. It has a little over 2 minute “Alternate Opening” actually gives what they used a run for it’s money. I would been cool with either one being used for the final cut which is rare for the additional option. It has the 6 minute “Behind the Scenes”. It has interviews with the cast and crew. They chat about about this project. They talk about some of their favorite stuff from it. They go over the special fx and themes here. They show appreciation for each other. It has some additional behind the scenes footage. It has the almost 8 minute “Fan Expo Interview”. It’s an question and answer with Vivieno Caldinelli, Brandon Cohen, and Mark McKinney. They chat about the origins of the story and it’s original short. The director tells how he got involved with this monster horror flick. They share their experiences on it. They bring up previous stuff that they worked on together. They talk about the casting and characters for Scared Shitless. It has little over a minute “Toilet Gag On Set”. It’s a quick inside look into one of brutal scenes with the toilet. It has the “Trailer” for Scared Shitless. It comes with a slipcover. This is a must own for any gorehound and monster horror fan.
