Hutch Mansell (played by: Bob Odenkirk from Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Freaks of Nature, The Post, and The Cable Guy) is a ordinary man to his community, he has two children (played by: Gage Munroe from Hotel Transylvania: The Series and Paisley Cadorath) with his wife Becca (played by: Connie Nielsen from Basic, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Wonder Woman/Wonder Woman 1984, The Ice Harvest, and Gladiator). He has a boring job as an office worker in his father-in-law Eddie’s (played by: Michael Ironside from Scanners, Starship Troopers, Total Recall, TopGun, and The Next Karate Kid) metal fabrication company. Anger and daily frustrations finally catch up him and his suburban life. One night, an armed man and woman break into his house. They rob him and embarrass him in front of his family. Hutch contacts his half-brother Harry (played by: RZA from the WU-Tang Clan, The Dead Don’t Die, Cut Throat City, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and The Man with the Iron Fists 1/2) on a hidden radio in his office and explains that he held back because the burglars were desperate, scared, and using an unloaded gun.
Without saying a word, he goes to see his elderly father David (played by: Christopher Lloyd from the Back to the Future franchise, Clue, Senior Moment, The Addams Family 1/2, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit) and borrows his old FBI badge plus gun to track down the burglars. He feels bad when he notices that they were just trying to take care of their sick child. On the way back on the bus, He protects a woman from being harassed by a local gang. He defends and beats them all down as a one many army to everyone’s surprise. Harry sends him to “The Barber” (played by: Colin Salmon from Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons, Krypton, Punisher: War Zone, Resident Evil franchise, and the James Bond franchise) where he finds out that one of his victims was the younger brother of notorious Russian crime lord Yulian Kuznetsov (played by: Aleksey Serebryakov from Piligrim, Furious, Dark Planet, and Van Gogi). Yulian is now looking for revenge against the ordinary man who hurt his family and sends his right hand man Pavel (played by: Araya Mengesha from Hemlock Grove and Shoot the Messenger) to take care of it. His mysterious past is revealed when he proves to be more than capable of defending himself against the Russian mob’s most dangerous assassins. Can Hutch save his family from this gangster’s blood thirsty revenge????
Nobody is the best movie that I’ve seen this year and it’s already one of my favorites. Nobody really took me by surprise, I expected it to be fun and entertaining but it was much more than that. It’s from the writer and producer of the John Wick franchise and it feels like it’s kinda apart of that universe to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a John Wick clone or anything like that but it’s similar to those films. John Wick and Hutch Mansell are both dangerous trained killers but their personalities are completely different. The writing for Nobody is top notch. It delivers on every possible thing that you would want from the action and revenge sub-genres plus more. It has an excellent blend of action, crime, suspense, drama, and comedy thrown in for good measure. All the characters are very interesting and they not too over the top like most movies are similar to this one. The character build up and development for the lead Hutch Mansell is amazing here. Just a normal guy sick of routine life and being pushed around at first. Then it goes into his dark past and what he’s been keeping inside all this time before losing his shit. Bob Odenkirk gives his best feature film performance in Nobody. He was perfect as Hutch Mansell. I didn’t expect him to be like this at all but he proved me wrong. Bob Odenkirk was bad ass and brutal in this.
Christopher Lloyd is back with a vengeance in Nobody. The iconic character actor has stayed in the background and kept it simple the last few years. He hasn’t really done much or anything major in a long time but it all changes here. This is his craziest in forever and it reminds you of why everyone respects this man when it comes to cinema. This Grandpa doesn’t mess around and he can still kill with the best of them. I’ve barely heard of actor Aleksey Serebryakov before Nobody but he is now on radar when it comes to anything in the future. He could have went way over the top or been the cliche villain for Nobody but he done something different with the role. Yulian Kuznetsov is very charismatic and grabs your attention every time that he is on the screen. He’s more about being a business man and show off than dealing with actual crime. He likes to be in the spotlight for all the right reasons and not his deadly power in the criminal underground. Yulian Kuznetsov is just as sadistic as some of the worst he is pushed to his limits. The supporting cast here is top notch which includes all kinds of familiar faces like Connie Nielsen, RZA, Michael Ironside, Colin Salmon, and Araya Mengesha. If you are a fan of action and revenge films, this is a must watch. It’s going to be hard to top Nobody when it comes to the best movies this year. This deserves more attention because it’s the most entertaining and fun feature so far, HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation from Universal Pictures! This 2160p (2.39:1) transfer with Dolby Vision and HDR10 looks stunning in 4K. Nobody really takes advantage of the high quality format when it comes to the visuals. It blends the suburban and gritty environments with ease here. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, French (Canada): Dolby Digital 5.1, and Spanish: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 on the UHD disc. Nobody shines when it comes to sound, this one is explosive and action packed. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the revenge has a killer boost, and the music is elevated here. It also has English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles.
Let’s discuss the special features from Universal! It has an “Audio Commentary” with lead actor Bob Odenkirk and director Ilya Naishuller. They really stick to the film here. They go into great detail about what’s going on in front of them and stay scene specific for the most part. Bob Odenkirk shares some real life stories when it comes to relating to this project. He is joking around a lot during the track and brings more humor to it. It has an additional solo “Audio Commentary” with director Ilya Naishuller. He chats about reworking the script and amping up the action for it. He talks about some of his infuences for it. He goes over the cast, crew, some of his favorite moments, and his experience for Nobody. It has almost 5 minutes of “Deleted Scenes”. These were a nice extra on the disc but I can see why all of them didn’t make the cut for the final version. “Hutch Hits Hard” is almost 4 minutes. It shows the transformation that actor Bob Odenkirk went through for Nobody. From comedian to bad ass with his dedicated training for the role. The little over 19 minute “Breaking Down the Action” is broken down into 4 different segments which includes Bus Fight, Home Invasion, Car Chase, and Tool and Die. The cast and crew take you behind the scenes plus break down some of the biggest and most action packed moments from Nobody. “Just a Nobody” is almost 13 minutes. It has interviews with the cast and crew for the production. They chat about the story, concept, script, characters, and what grabbed their attention to the project. They talk about find the right cast and director for Nobody. They go over their collaborations, experience, and thoughts on the feature.
