A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy is a 1982 comedy written and directed by Woody Allen (Annie Hall, New York Stories, Bullets Over Broadway, Anything Else, Match Point, Cassandra’s Dream, Interiors, and Manhattan). It’s loosely based on William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night. It grossed $9,077,269 worldwide at the box office. The creative Andrew Hobbs (played by: Woody Allen from Fading Gigolo, Picking Up the Pieces, Small Time Crooks, Scenes from a Mall, Mighty Aphrodite, and Hollywood Ending) is an inventor of some wild experiments. He decides to throw a weekend party with his beautiful wife Adrian (played by: Mary Steenburgen from Curb your Enthusiasm, Step Brothers, Back to the Future Part 3, Time after Time, Parenthood, Dead of Winter, Elf, Nixon, and Powder). They invite two other couples which includes feisty doctor Maxwell (played by : Tony Roberts from Serpico, Popcorn, Annie Hall, Radio Days, Amityville 3-D, 18 Again!, and Stardust Memories), his nurse Dulcy (played by: Julie Hagerty from Airplane franchise, Marriage Story, What about Bob?, U Turn, A Christmas Story Christmas, and Just Friends), respected philosopher Dr.Leopold Sturgis (played by: José Ferrer from Dune, The Being, The Evil that Men Do, Crash!, The Sentinel, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Swarm, and Bloody Birthday), and his fiancee Ariel (played by: Mia Farrow from Rosemary’s Baby, The Watcher, Be Kind Rewind, The Ex, The Omen, September, and Supergirl) at their romantic summer house in the countryside. As they spend more time together, they all start getting attracted to each other which causes chaos for their relationships. Will they this weekend with someone else????A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy is an interesting look at relationships and what happens when temptation starts to take over. Woody Allen is very hit or miss when it comes to his work. The script is great and it’s one of the better things about this production. Allen damn near makes everyone here unlikable at some point after it’s all said and done. No one is trustworthy in A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy and each character makes their own mistakes. I know that might not sound good when reading that but it’s rather impressive that he’s able to pull that off with the entire cast. It has some hilarious moments but some stuff just falls flat for the humor. Woody Allen as Andrew is the real instigator here. He starts this wacky chain of events. I always found Allen unique as an actor because he almost only works in his own movies and anything else kinda don’t work with his personality. Mary Steenburgen as Adrian has an amazing performance in A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy. You feel bad for her for a little bit but when you learn some to information it all flips. She’s almost like two different characters in this. Then she redeems herself. Mia Farrow as Ariel is the woman that everyone wants here. All of these guys are going crazy over her and it’s funny to see all the different results. She’s top notch, you can see why they all are attracted to her. Woody Allen has incredible chemistry with both women. The rest of the talented cast includes Tony Roberts, José Ferrer, and Julie Hagerty. There’s not a bad performance in this at all. I know this is one of Allen’s least appreciated features when it comes to his earlier work but I think it’s better than it’s reputation. It’s very unique entry for the sex comedy sub-genre and it still holds up pretty good after all these years so it has strong replay value.Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from MGM! This 1080p (1.85:1) transfer is the exact same 2015 restoration from Twilight Time. There was nothing wrong with that one at all when it was originally released so it still looks great on blu ray. It’s a massive upgrade compared to the older versions before that. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track on the disc. The audio has always sounded good for A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the chaos is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. There’s no extras on this release. Don’t let the artwork fool you, this is a pro pressed home video release and it’s not a BD-R. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
