Lone Wolf Blu Ray Review (High Octane Pictures)
Lone Wolf is a 2020 slasher co-written and directed by Justin “J.D.” Marmion (Prohibition Blues). It was co-written by Sam Cunningham (Turning the Tide: How One Game Changed the South), Jordan Rivera, Domenica Schatzman, and Victoria Schatzman. It was produced by Dan Schatzman (Cop vs. Killer). Charlie (played by: Jane Gardner from Recollection, Amateur Hour, and Insert Family Here) is a professional cosplayer specializing in fur suits. She decides to attend a huge furry event with her friends at an isolated cabin. Leon Fowl (played by: Tohmas Howery) is responsible for the unique party and he traps his guests inside after they get comfortable. The unexpected victims fight for their lives as the psychopath tries to create real furries with them. The Lone Wolf has started this demented game of thrills, can these girls survive the night after experiencing this living hell????
Lone Wolf grabbed my attention right away with it’s original concept. They have done almost everything when it comes to the slasher sub-genre but I don’t remember any of them mixes it with the furry world. It starts off as your typical party with a killer type of vibe. It has a few deaths instantly to pull you in but then not much happens for awhile. There’s lots of dancing and people just having a good time until it turns into a nightmare. It almost feels like a completely different feature towards the middle. It was more like a torture porn atmosphere like Saw and Hostel than a slasher for a little bit. I thought it was getting more interesting during this but it goes into survivor mode once some of the girls escape. The script is a mess and it really doesn’t know what it wants to be. Newcomer Jane Gardner is the lead in Lone Wolf, it’s pretty obvious that she doesn’t much experience before this low budget project. She is just okay but she is some solid eye candy. I actually thought the villain Lone Wolf looked pretty unique and stood out when it comes to your typical lunatic in these types of films. The rest of the supporting cast includes Tohmas Howery, Christine Liao (Yappie), Jerry Walker (The Immortal Wars: Dekay’s Paradox), Kiko Sanchez (A Million Ways to Die in the West), Zacciah Hanson (Roswell, New Mexico), Victorya Danylko-Petrovskaya (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Gem Andrade, and Alexandra Dustin. I did some research, I can’t find much about the entire cast and crew for this independent production from a few years ago. It looks like most of them only worked on Lone Wolf and left the industry. Director Justin Marmion has worked on bigger movies like Terminator Salvation, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and Longmire but he hasn’t tried to direct anything since his short Prohibition Blues. It had good special fx during some of the murders. Don’t get me wrong, Lone Wolf has some solid moments sprinkled in there but it’s very inconsistent. It doesn’t have a smooth flow to it and it’s honestly a chore to watch at some point. If you are into slashers then it might be worth checking out at least once. It’s currently streaming on Tubi and a few others if you are interested.
Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from High Octane Pictures! This 1080p (2:35.1) transfer has it’s moments visually especially during the party scenes. It looks pretty good for it’s small budget. It has a English: Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The audio is great for this low budget slasher. All of the dialogue is very clean, the killing is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. The only special features on this blu ray is the “Trailer” for Lone Wolf and a variety of “Trailers” from High Octane Pictures. This is a M.O.D (BD-R) home video release.
