Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman: Complete Series Blu Ray Review (Warner Bros.)

Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is a 1993 superhero television series created, co-written, and produced by Deborah Joy LeVine (Kaya, Mental, The Division, Courthouse, Dawson’s Creek, and Any Day Now). It was directed by Philip Sgriccia (Supernatural), Randy Zisk (Monk), Alan J. Levi (Knight Rider 2000), Michael W. Watkins (The Blacklist), James R. Bagdonas (Modern Family), Daniel Attias (Silver Bullet), and many others. It was produced by Chris Long (Timecop, Dirt, The Mentalist, The Americans, Reasonable Doubts, Bosco, and Gilmore Girls). It lasted for 4 seasons and it aired on ABC!!!! News reporter Clark Kent (played by: Dean Cain from Las Vegas, Out of Time, Rat Race, Best Men, Vendetta and Smallville) keeps a busy life between his Daily Planet duties and his secret identity as Superman fighting crime. He has complicated relationships with the ambitious Lois Lane (played by: Teri Hatcher from Tango and Cash, Tomorrow Never Dies, Desperate Housewives, 2 Days in the Valley, Soapdish, and Supergirl) for both of his personalities. As Clark/Superman gets distracted, the evil and power hungry Lex Luther (played by: John Shea from Mutant X, Freejack, Gossip Girl, Southie, and Tales from the Crypt) is determined to destroy his nemesis at any cost. Who will win this war???? Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman was more about romance and comedy than your typical comic book based TV show. It definitely showed a completely different side of the classic superhero. This universe appeals to a bigger audience. Dean Cain is very solid in his breakout roles as both Clark Kent and Superman here. Both sides of him stand out in their own ways. He changed it up depending who he was at the time. This variation gives a new look at one of the most popular additions to the DC Comics world. He’s more vulnerable and human than before in this adaptation. Teri Hatcher steals the show as the feisty Lois Lane. She’s always getting in trouble and she never knows when to stop despite danger always being around the corner. She looks amazing in this, she’s top eye candy. It’s rather easy to fall in love with her. The chemistry between the two leads is excellent and it always feels organic in every episode. Veteran actor John Shea does his own version of the classic supervillain Lex Luther. That’s what I really enjoyed about his brave portrayal in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. It’s nothing like any other variant of the evil mastermind. The rest of the cast included Lane Smith (The Mighty Ducks), K Callan (Knives Out), Eddie Jones (A League of Their Own), Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead franchise), Justin Whalin (Child’s Play 3), Michael Landes (Final Destination 2), Tracy Scoggins (Demonic Toys), Kenneth Kimmins (Coach), Richard Belzer (Homicide: Life on the Street), Justine Bateman (Family Ties), Fred Willard (Anchorman), Denise Crosby (Pet Sematary), Terry Kiser (Weekend at Bernie’s), Robert Culp (The Greatest American Hero), Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond), Bronson Pinchot (True Romance), J.T. Walsh (Breakdown), Shelley Long (Cheers), Robert Carradine (Revenge of the Nerds), Cress Williams (Black Lightning), Andrew Bryniarski (Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise), Dick Miller (Gremlins), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China), James Earl Jones (Star Wars franchise), Adam West (Batman), David Warner (The Omen), and Tim Thomerson (Trancers franchise). Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman was loaded with so much talent and it had some awesome cameos during it’s run. I’ve always been surprised about the lack of additional characters and iconic stories from the actual DC Comics universe used here. They really didn’t use much from the comic books. It was more aimed at families and silly fun. It wasn’t shy to get a little ridiculous and over the top. Don’t get me wrong, it still had a good amount of action but that was never it’s main focus. It fully represents the 90’s and it’s a nice throwback to it. It’s still very fun and always entertaining, I remember watching this when it was originally on so it’s a reminder of my younger years while revisiting it. RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and list the special features from Warner Bros Pictures! These 1080p (1.37:1) transfers on every episode are from a brand new restoration. Yes, it’s a major upgrade compared to the previous DVD sets. This is probably the best that Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman will ever look on home video. This TV show always had a bigger budget and it shows compared to some of it’s competition made during the same time. It has English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 tracks on each episode for this 20 disc set. Unfortunately, I have to report that the original music is still altered here so you might want to hold on to your DVD sets if you want to experience those. The action is all over the place and it sounds great during it’s more chaotic situations in the series. All of the dialogue is crisp, the adventures are elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It looks like everything was carried over from the previous DVD home video releases on here. It has an “Audio Commentary” with Dean Cain, Deborah Joy LeVine, and Robert Butler for the pilot. It has the almost 26 minute “From Rivals to Romance: The Making of Lois and Clark”. It has the almost 20 minute “Pilot Presentation”. It has the almost 7 minute “Taking Flight”. These are all located on Season One. It has the little over 10 minute “Secrets of Season Two”. It has the little over 8 minute “Marketing Metropolis: The Fans of Lois and Clark”. These are all located on Season Two. It has the little over 8 minute “A History of Romance”. It has the almost 11 minute “The Man of Steel Trivia Challenge” hosted by Dean Cain. These are all located on Season Three. It comes in a high quality slipbox but it’s DVD style so it’s bigger than your typical Blu Ray set.
