Last Man Standing Blu Ray Review (Gravitas Ventures)

Last Man Standing: Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie & Tupac is a 2021 documentary film produced and directed by Nick Broomfield (Biggie & Tupac, Kurt & Courtney, Aileen Wuornos: Selling of a Serial Killer, Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam, America Undercover, Lily Tomlin, Monster in a Box, and Diamond Skulls). This is a sequel to the original 2002 documentary Biggie & Tupac. Filmmaker Nick Broomfield returns to the unsolved murders of The Notorious Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur after exploring it on 2002’s Biggie & Tupac. It digs deeper into the gangs and corrupt cops. This follow up focuses more attention to the center of it all, Death Row’s own Suge Knight. Before everyone was scared to speak up but now that he’s in prison, the truth is easier to investigate!!!! This is an interesting sequel to “Biggie and Tupac” that was made 19 years earlier from the same director. It opens up with Suge Knight’s crime and conviction. This is what gets so many people to open up more this time about Suge when it comes to the Tupac and Biggie murders. It goes into the corruption of the police when it comes to these true crimes on the hip hop icons. It has interviews with former police, Death Row Records members, friends, and family. Suge is the main character and focus for this documentary. Just a warning, Biggie is basically a background character until about 60 minutes in to the story of the dangerous rap label owner plus his bad influence on Tupac. They cover everything from Suge playing college football to him taking in his artists as his own family. A variety of people go over his violent, cold blooded, and mean moments while he was running the biggest crew in music at the time plus still living his thug life despite fame. They chat about how Suge really changed Tupac and how he acted after working with him on music for Death Row. Lots of people here seem to point that out as his downfall. They go into detail about what lead him into the situation that ended his life when he was killed. They go cover Biggie making a mistake by visiting Los Angeles after the murder of his former friend. They bring up all the corruption around the tragedy. Director Nick Broomfield shows his maturity when it comes to filmmaking in this. On his earlier projects, he would force himself as one of the stars in front of the camera but he mainly just narrates and directs which makes the overall final product so much better. Last Man Standing features all kinds of great archive video footage and photos from Death Row. This is an excellent companion piece to the original source material especially if you curious to learn more about the infamous rap CEO and known bully!!!!Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Gravitas Ventures! This 1080p (1.78:1) transfer is better than expected especially for it’s lower budget documentary. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. All of the dialogue is very clean and the music has a nice boost to it here. It has English SDH subtitles. There’s no special features on this M.O.D (Professional BD-R) home video release.
