Last Christmas 4K Review (Universal)

Last Christmas is a 2019 romantic comedy produced and directed by Paul Feig (Arrested Development, The Office, Nurse Jackie, The Heat, Spy, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor, and Bridesmaids). It was written by Emma Thompson (Wit, Nanny McPhee franchise, Effie Gray, and Bridget Jones’s Baby) and Bryony Kimmings (Opera Mums with Bryony Kimmings). It’s inspired by the song from Wham!. The budget was $25,000,000 and it grossed $123,446,172 worldwide at the box office. Kate (played by: Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones, Terminator Genisys, Solo, Secret Invasion, and Voice from the Stone) works as an elf at a year-round holiday shop. Kate faces an endless streak of bad luck and poor decision-making until she meets the mysterious Tom (played by: Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, The Gentlemen, Snake Eyes, and Assassin Club), a kind-hearted man with an unknown past who challenges her cynical world view. It seems like nothing can keep this mismatched couple together, but sometimes you gotta listen to your heart and you gotta have faith!!!! Last Christmas is an interesting holiday themed romantic comedy co-written by actress Emma Thompson. It’s directed by Paul Feig who’s no stranger to the comedy sub-genre. It’s wild an old school track from the band Wham! inspired this whole production. The script definitely takes it’s time with character development but it has a nice build up to everything. Emilia Clarke as Kate is the reason to give this a shot. She’s top notch as the lead, she’s a mess but she’s trying to change her life. Henry Golding as Tom is solid but I think Golding was miscast in Last Christmas. I personally think it would have been a little better with a different choice. I’m not saying that he’s bad or anything in this, he just doesn’t really fit this at all. The rest of the supporting cast includes Emma Thompson (Love Actually), Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Boris Isakovic (Pad), Maxim Baldry (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Patti LuPone (Witness), Lydia Leonard (The Fifth Estate), and Ritu Arya (The Umbrella Academy). Last Christmas keeps itself unique with it’s twists. It’s something different when it comes to Christmas films. I enjoyed this more on this revisit compared to when I originally watched it. It’s an interesting approach to the rom com sub-genre and holiday features. It’s better than expected, RECOMMENDED!!!! It’s has excellent production design and winter locations that shine here. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, and Spanish: Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 on the UHD. The soundtrack is what stands out when it comes to the audio here. All of the dialogue is very clean, the romance is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH and Spanish subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Paul Feig. It has an additional “Audio Commentary” with director Paul Feig and actress Emma Thompson. It had an almost 2 minute “Alternate Ending”. It has an almost 15 minute “Blooper Reel”.
