Laserblast Blu Ray Review (Full Moon Features)
Laserblast is a 1978 science fiction film directed by Michael Rae. Rae previously was the second unit director on Sinner’s Blood but he never worked in the film industry again after making his directing debut here. It was originally distributed by Irwin Yablans, yes the same producer responsible for Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween 3, Fade to Black, Hell Night, Roller Boogie, Parasite, Prison, & Arena. It was before Empire or Full Moon existed, producer Charles Band only had 5 other credits before Laserblast! This film was his first collaboration with visual effects master David Allen & his composer brother Richard Band. It was also Richard’s first movie score, same with co-composer Joel Goldsmith. The music for this was written in 5 days. In 1986, Band announced that he was doing Laserblast II. The company fell into financial difficulties at the time & the project was eventually scrapped. Charles Band’s 1988 film Deadly Weapon used similar story lines & concepts from this. Laserblast is considered one of the worst movies ever made. It even made it on the 7th season finale on Mystery Science Theater 3000 which was their last episode aired on Comedy Central. That being said, it still has more home video releases than most films out there which include VHS with Media Home Entertainment (1981), Laserdisc with Shadow Entertainment (1993), VHS with Full Moon (1997), VHS with United American (1998), & DVD with Full Moon (1999) so that proves it’s always had a solid fan base! It’s still relevant considering this blu ray release & it recently got a comic made from Eibon / VHS comics!
It opens a with humanoid alien getting blasted by prehistoric looking aliens in the desert. Billy Duncan (played by: Kim Milford from Nightmare at Noon, Bloodbrothers, & Wired to Kill) isn’t happy about his mother going on another trip leaving him alone again. He goes over to see Kathy Farley (played by: Cheryl Smith from Cinderella, Massacre at Central High, & The Incredible Melting Man) but the Colonel Farley (played by: Keenan Wynn from Black Moon Rising, Dr. Strangelove, The Devil’s Rain, Orca, & Piranha) gives him a hard time about it so he leaves. Deputy Pete Ungar (played by: Dennis Burkley from The Doors, Tin Cup, & Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot) & Deputy Jesse Jeep chase & pull over Billy for speeding. Chuck & Froggy tease Billy at a stop. No one seems to like him except for Kathy. He comes across the weapon left by the alien in the desert from earlier. After messing around with it, he discovers it actually works! The Aliens find out Billy has their weapon. Chuck & Froggy (played by: Eddie Deezen from Grease, WarGames, & Teenage Exorcist) are forcing themselves on Kathy. Billy tries to protect her but gets beat up by the bullies.
At the night he goes out for revenge & blows up their vehicle with his new toy. The sheriff (played by: Ron Masak from Police Story, Murder She Wrote, & Tora! Tora! Tora!) sends out his deputies to investigate the situation. FBI agent Tony Craig (played by: Gianni Russo from The Godfather 1/2, Super Mario Bros, & Out for Justice) comes into the police station looking for answers about anything unusual happening in town. Billy goes to Dr. Mellon (played by: Roddy McDowall from Fright Night 1/2, Planet of the Apes franchise, Shakma, & Class of 1984) for a check up about his recent changes since finding the weapon. Billy gets payback on the abusive deputies that always enjoyed picking on him & giving him tickets just because he could afford them. Kathy is scared of what Billy has been become. He has lost his mind & can’t stop bringing chaos to anyone close to him. He’s out for revenge & he doesn’t seem to care who gets in his way. Both Tony & the Aliens are trying to track down Billy at the same time to stop him. He starts destroying everything around him. Can they stop him????
Is this a good film? NO! Is it very entertaining? HELL YEAH! This is the type of movie that you should watch with all your friends while getting messed up. I don’t think it’s one of the worst movies ever made either like it’s been called before. It’s much better than a decent amount that I’ve unfortunately sat through during my life. For it’s budget the special effects, visual effects, & musical score REALLY shine. Plus it has a solid cast with some familiar faces. It make this much more enjoyable than you would expect. I thought it was extremely weird to see probably the biggest nerd actor ever Eddie Deezen play a bully in this. I guess that tells something about this crazy feature because that would never happen in anything else. I had some much fun with this early independent science fiction entry.
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation & special features from Full Moon! Honestly, Laserblast has never looked that good for home video & it’s had LOTS of different releases over the years. It’s still a huge upgrade on this 1080p (1.78:1) transfer & the best version you will ever see this type of film get. One of the highlights about this blu ray release is the two audio options which include English: Dolby Digital 5.1 & English: Dolby Digital 2.0 on here! It’s definitely one of the best sounding blu rays from the Full Moon back catalog so far. You might be asking yourself right now, why should I pick up this release if I already own this on DVD or VHS? My answer would be the brand new exclusive “Audio Commentary” from brothers Charles & Richard. This is actually Richard Band’s first time ever doing a commentary which also means it’s the first time to experience these siblings talking about the production together. It’s great to hear these two reminiscence about one of their original opportunities in the film industry. Last but not least you get vintage “Trailers” for various Full Moon Features movies like Cinderella, Crash!, The Day Time Ended, End of the World, Fairy Tales, Mansion of the Doomed, & Tourist Trap. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
