Keeping Up with the Joneses 4K Review (20th Century Fox)

Keeping Up with the Joneses is a 2016 spy comedy directed by Greg Mottola (Peacemaker, The Newsroom, Confess Fletch, Paul, Superbad, Adventureland, Arrested Development, and The Daytrippers). It was written by Michael LeSieur (You, Me and Dupree, The Maiden Heist, Glory Daze, and The Grinch). It was produced by Laurie MacDonald (Gladiator franchise, Men in Black franchise, The Ring franchise, Twister, Catch Me If You Can, The Lookout, Sweeney Todd, and Zorro franchise). The budget was $40,000,000 and it grossed $29,918,745 worldwide at the box office. An ordinary suburban couple Jeff (played by: Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover franchise, Due Date, and Operation: Endgame) and Karen Gaffney (played by: Isla Fisher from Wedding Crashers, Now You See Me franchise, and Tag) finds it’s not that easy keeping up with the Joneses. Their brand new impossibly attractive and ultra sophisticated neighbors especially when they discover Tim (played by: Jon Hamm from Mad Men, The Town, Baby Driver, and Tag) and Natalie Jones (played by: Gal Gadot from the Fast and Furious franchise, Wonder Woman franchise, Justice League, and Red Notice) are really covert spies embroiled in the dangerous world of international espionage!!!! Keeping Up with the Joneses is a hilarious action comedy hybrid from director Greg Mottola. I really enjoyed Superbad, Adventureland, Paul, and The Daytrippers before I checked this out. This is from the same visionary behind those quality efforts. It’s a completely different take on the spy sub-genre. It deals with your typical American couple that’s curious with their new mysterious neighbors. This leads to some chaotic and funny scenarios. Zach Galifianakis is Jeff Gaffney. He’s the guy in the office no one takes seriously and they always brush him off. He’s out of his element but he doesn’t give up. Isla Fisher is housewife Karen Gaffney. She lets her curiosity and being nosey get the best of her. She just can’t help her suspicions about the new couple go. She’s feisty but she not really that slick when it comes to following people around. Jon Hamm is the confident Tim Jones. He’s the type that can blend in with any group of strangers. He becomes the life of the party whenever he goes. He uses his surroundings to his advantage. Gal Gadot is not shy as Natalie Jones. She doesn’t hide her talents and she’s eager to show someone up when she knows that she is better than them. She looks amazing and she can manipulate whoever is in the way. These four unlikely people are put together in a wild journey that can go anywhere depending on who shows their true motivations first. The chemistry is surprisingly top notch even though these couples are nothing alike in every possible way. The rest of the supporting cast includes Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens), Matt Walsh (Veep), Kevin Dunn (Transformers franchise), Bobby Lee (Pineapple Express), Ming Zhao (Days of Our Lives), Maribeth Monroe (Workaholics), Michael Liu (Shameless), Jona Xiao (The Pitt), Lauren Revard (Doom Patrol), Jeff Chase (The Punisher), and Marc Grapey (Chicago Med). Keeping Up with the Joneses is a blast but I wish it was Rated R. There’s moments that you can tell it wants to do more but it’s limited because of it. It still has decent action in this. There’s some intense car chases and unexpected fights. It’s full of interesting twists so it keeps the audience on their toes. The secret snake restaurant stuff was hysterical. It shows that there’s a dark element in Suburbia that most people don’t know about. It still holds up after 10 years. The replay value is pretty strong. It’s highly entertaining and it’s better than lots of it’s competition at the time. It’s currently streaming on both Hulu and Tubi right now so give it a revisit it sometime if you haven’t watched it in awhile, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from 20th Century Fox! This 2160p (2.40:1) transfer with HDR10 blows away it’s previous DVD and Blu Ray home video releases. This is a little older when it comes to the UHD format, it’s from 2017 but it still looks great. For a comedy, this actually has some nice visuals. It’s loaded with all kinds of audio options which includes English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1, French: DTS 5.1, Spanish: DTS 5.1, and English Audio descriptive tracks on the disc. Keeping Up with the Joneses has plenty of action with fights, spy action, and car chases that amp up the sound for this. All of the dialogue is crisp, the madness is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has plenty of subtitles which includes English SDH, French, Spanish, Cantonese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Mandarin, Norwegian, and Swedish for all of those worldwide fans. The bonus material is located on the Blu Ray disc. It has the almost 12 minute “Spy Game”. This is a nice quick little behind the scenes piece. It has some interviews with some of main cast and crew. It has additional footage from the set and the actual movie in this. It has a little over 18 minutes of “Deleted Scenes”. It has the little over 5 minute “Keeping Up with Georgia”. This is all about where they filmed this action comedy hybrid. It explores the locations of the production. It has the little over 2 minute “Gallery”. It has the “Theatrical Trailer” for Keeping Up with the Joneses. It comes with a digital code (it already expired in 2019) and a Blu Ray copy of the release.
