I Spit On Your Grave Steelbook Blu Ray Review (Lionsgate / Bloody Disgusting)

I Spit on Your Grave is a 2010 horror film directed by Steven R. Monroe (I Spit on Your Grave 2, Wyvern, House of 9, Left in Darkness, The Exorcism of Molly Hartley, and It Waits). It was written by Adam Rockoff (Silent Night Fatal Night, Wicked Lake, The Wrong franchise, and A Roommate to Die For). It’s a remake of 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave. It was produced by creator Meir Zarchi (I Spit on your Grave franchise, Don’t Mess with my Sister, and Holy Hollywood). It followed by two sequels in 2013 and 2015. The budget was $2,000,000 and it grossed $1,278,650 worldwide at the box office. Author Jennifer Hills (played by: Sarah Butler from I Spit on your Grave 3, Twisted Tales, The Demented, Nightmare Nurse, and Love Vampires) gets an isolated cabin rented from Earl (played by: Tracey Walter from Batman, Repo Man, City Slickers, The Silence of the Lambs, 31, and Conan the Destroyer) to work on her next novel. She runs into some redneck locals that includes Johnny (played by: Jeff Branson from Ten Days in the Valley, Wolves of Wall Street, and Shaft), Stanley (played by: Daniel Franzese from Bully, Mean Girls, Conviction, and Cruel World), Andy (played by: Rodney Eastman from A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Chopping Mall, Mobsters, and Deadly Weapon), and Matthew (played by: Chad Lindberg from The Fast and the Furious, Supernatural, October Sky, Horizon, and The Rookie) that she’s offended by just wanting to be left alone to focus on her writing. They come back to terrorize and rape the stranded woman. She goes to the local sheriff Storch (played by: Andrew Howard from Bates Motel, Taken 3, Echo, Mayor of Kingstown, Revolver, and Watchmen) for help after her painful experience. She decides to take care of the situation herself when she plots revenge on her rapists. The predators become the prey after messing with the wrong woman. What will happen next???? I Spit on Your Grave is one of the better remakes in the horror genre. The script takes the original concept but it gives it a modern update with some twists. It’s similar to the original but it puts it’s own unique spin on everything so it separates itself from just being a shot for shot version like some others. It’s a hard subject to watch, all these cold blooded rednecks gang rape this girl that’s all alone. I felt like the original is still more disturbing when it comes to that aspect but they stepped up their game for the violence, revenge, and gore for this reboot for I Spit on Your Grave. It’s gets extremely brutal when she is out for vengeance plus these guys are not likable at all so you are rooting for her to destroy these scumbags. The special fx are great from veteran artist Ken Speed. Sarah Butler as Jennifer Hills is excellent here. She has a very complicated role, she plays two different type of people in this. She completely flips after all that trauma. Jeff Branson as Johnny is a impressive villain in I Spit on Your Grave. He’s the leader of the local rednecks and he pushes the others to be worse. Andrew Howard as Sheriff Storch is great as the local law enforcement that’s an influence in his small community. The rest of the supporting cast includes Chad Lindberg, Tracey Walter, Daniel Franzese, and Rodney Eastman. There’s not a single weak link when it comes to this small cast, everyone steps up on this revenge horror feature. I never expected this one to spawn two other sequels but I enjoyed the entire franchise. I Spit on Your Grave is still pure exploitation entertainment and it has strong replay value to it, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Lionsgate! This 1080p (2.35:1) unrated transfer appears be the same as the previous Anchor Bay home video release that’s been out of print for awhile now. It’s still looks really good after all these years but I’m a little shocked that it didn’t get a new restoration for this steelbook exclusive. It has an English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track on the disc. It’s the previous audio just like the picture quality but luckily it was awesome back then so that’s a good thing for this re-release. All of the dialogue is very clean, the vengeance is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH and Spanish subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Steven R. Monroe and producer Lisa Hansen. They chat about their struggles with the rating board and that they were originally contracted for an R rather than it’s current unrated version. Anchor Bay couldn’t defend the butched R cut when compared to the uncensored one that’s here. They talk about the cast, characters, kills, and lots more for I Spit on Your Grave. If you are interested in finding out more about this production, then you need to listen to this. It’s a fun track, they have a good time revisiting this. It has the little over 16 minute “The Revenge of Jennifer Hills: Remaking a Cult Icon”. It has interviews with the crew and cast. They show their respect for the original. They discuss updating the older exploitation retribution cult classic into something more modern. Like I said before, they put their take on the familiar story and concept. It has almost 12 minutes of “Deleted Scenes”. It has 3 different “Trailers” and a “Radio Spot”. All of the older extras were carried over for this home video release but nothing new was added. It comes with a digital copy. It’s in awesome limited edition steelbook packaging that really stands out. This is a Walmart exclusive release, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
