Inserts Blu Ray review (MGM)
Inserts is a 1975 drama written and directed by John Byrum (The Razor’s Edge, Heart Beat, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Murder in High Places, and The Whoopee Boys). The original U.S. release had around 18 minutes removed. It had an estimated budget of $350,000. In a decaying Hollywood mansion in the 1930s, a once great director Boy Wonder (played by. Richard Dreyfuss from Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Dillinger, Stand by Me, American Graffiti, Lansky, What About Bob?, Stakeout franchise, and Mr. Holland’s Opus) is reduced to making these adult movies produced by the sleazy Big Mac (played by: Bob Hoskins from Super Mario Bros, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Long Good Friday, Hook, and Mona Lisa) starring a drug-addicted actress Harlene (played by: Veronica Cartwright from Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Birds, Money Talks, and Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh) and her ambitious leading man Rex the Wonder Dog (played by: Stephen Davies from The Long Good Friday, Star Trek franchise, The Nest, and Lords of the Deep) that’s willing to do anything to be on screen. Mac wants to put his girlfriend Cathy Cake (played by: Jessica Harper from Suspiria, Shock Treatment, Minority Report, and Phantom of the Paradise) in these underground productions and things start getting real complicated for this low budget world!!!!
Inserts is a very dark and sleazy drama from the 70’s. No one really talks about this film because it’s one of those rare NC-17 rated productions. Those generally don’t do great in the mainstream but I really appreciate them not backing down and watering down their product. John Byrum puts together that familiar situation from back in the day, a once promising film maker with all kinds of potential is forced to do cheap low budget adult features to keep working after a drinking problem. Richard Dreyfuss gives one of his most underrated performances as Boy Wonder in Inserts. He’s a director that’s just trying to help working and make a living. Bob Hoskins is awesome as producer Big Mac. He’s just try make whatever smut that will grab attention and earn cash. He uses his power to throw his girlfriend into the mix. Veteran actresses Veronica Cartwright and Jessica Harper are two performers that want to be seen and they want to go places in their career. Both are not shy at all in Inserts and they show off their bodies. I knew the concept here but I was still a little surprised to see both of them nude. Both characters are very different from each other despite doing the same job. Stephen Davies as Rex the Wonder Dog loves his gig in the porno business. He gets to share the screen with so many different beautiful women and he gets paid to do it. Inserts has a very small cast, it basically only features the few people that I listed but they are all very talented. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with Inserts but it was much darker than expected. It doesn’t hold back on anything. There’s some real interesting roles in this. These select few embrace their work despite what the public thinks about it. It has sharp dialogue and it really elevates it. It was pretty risky for it’s time, it’s definitely not for everyone but if you dig it then it will be very appreciated for it did during the 70’s. It’s really entertaining and it has solid replay value, RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from MGM! This 1080p (1.85:1) NC-17 transfer appears to be the exact same restoration as the 2016 Twilight Time home video release. It’s still a major improvement compared to it’s original DVD and VHS versions. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track on the disc. The audio is very solid and it has it’s moments but it’s not really a explosive type of feature. All of the dialogue is very clean, all the drama is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. There’s no extras on this release. Don’t let the artwork fool you, this is a pro pressed home video release and it’s not a BD-R. It’s available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com!!!!
