Inbred Blu Ray Review (Leomark Studios)

Inbred is a 2011 slasher film co-written, produced, and directed by Alex Chandon (Bad Karma, The Perv Parlor, Pervirella, Cradle of Fear, Cradle of Filth, Shortcuts to Hell: Volume 1, and Drillbit). It was co-written and produced by Paul Shrimpton (Zombieworld, No Ambition, and Attack of the Adult Babies). It was produced by Joanne Mitchell (Bait, Evie, Before Dawn, Scream of the Wolf, and Magpie). The estimated budget was £1,250,000. Four juvenile offenders which includes Dwight (played by: Chris Waller from Fright Night 2, Believe the Magic, and The Sleeping Room), Zeb (played by: Terry Hayward from This is England, Acid Daemons, and Young Dracula), Tim (played by: James Burrows from Fighting with my Family, Robin Hood, and Eden Lake), Sam (played by: Nadine Mulkerrin from Hollyoaks, In with the Flynns, and The Royal) with their care workers Kate (played by: Jo Hartley from Eddie the Eagle, Dead Man’s Shoes, and Prevenge) and Jeff (played by: James Doherty from House of the Dragon, The Forgotten, and In the Loop) visit the secluded Yorkshire village of Mortlake for a project. The community doesn’t like outsiders and they don’t take kindly when they invade their small town. The strangers made it worse and they cause problems so all the unstable locals end up angry over it. The visitors find out the hard way that they should have never came here. The psychopathic inbreds of Mortlake lead by Jim (played by: Seamus O’Neill from Dead Man’s Shoes, Evie, Pelican Blood, and Shameless) show them some gruesome hospitality. Will they survive this brutal nightmare???? Inbred got dumped to direct to video in the states right away. Not only that but it was butchered and edited so bad for it’s original home video release so it never had a chance here unfortunately. I’ve always wanted to see it back in the day but I was waiting for the uncensored version, luckily Leomark upgraded the low budget slasher to HD and it’s no longer cut unlike it’s previous DVD. Director Alex Chandon is mainly known for directing all kinds of Cradle of Filth music videos but he makes a huge impact with this nasty independent splatterfest. The script keeps it very simple. Some bad kids are forced to do some charity and probationary work for their past mistakes. None of them are really like that likeable so it’s a nice set up for what’s to come later on. The two care workers are stuck at the wrong place at the wrong time. Chris Waller, James Doherty, Terry Hayward, James Burrows, Nadine Mulkerrin, and Jo Hartley are solid leads. They all have their own unique qualities that make them stand out from each other. You really feel bad for the Kate and Jeff characters. They are just trying to do something positive and it completely backfires on them. Seamus O’Neill as Jim is a fantastic villain here. He’s ruthless, he doesn’t care about his own kin and he just wants to punish anyone that crosses his community. All of the inbreds have an original look to them. It’s a weird group of vicious killers. They won’t be forgotten after viewing this. The rest of the supporting cast includes Emily Booth (Doghouse), Mark Rathbone (The Gentlemen), Mat Fraser (American Horror Story), Neil Leiper (Harvest), Derek Melling (Ascension), Damien Lloyd-Davies (Gimp), Dominic Brunt (Sky Sharks), George Newton (Control), Neil Keenan (Cradle of Fear), Pat Lally (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Lee Jerrum (Dead End). Inbred kinda reminds me of a British version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. You can definitely see the influence from it in this. A variety of dangerous weapons including a chainsaw are used on all the unlucky victims here. The best thing about Inbred is the high quality practical special fx from artist Duncan Jarman (Event Horizon, Sweeney Todd, Doom, World War Z, Harry Potter franchise, The Mummy, Dracula Untold, Overlord, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and Resident Evil). It does have some additional CGI blood because Inbred is loaded with so much gore but it mixes fine with the old school fx. The blood keeps spraying in this English slasher. It actually delivers some real creative deaths for this independent production. They play some messed up games for their demented locals. It’s wild that the United States wasted this awesome horror feature when it was originally released here because it deserves more attention. I’m hoping it gets a second chance with this brand new blu ray because it’s exactly what a low budget slasher should be. I wish other directors would take notes from Inbred. I personally think it’s one of the best from that sub-genre and it’s already one of my all time favorite British horror films, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Leomark Entertainment! This 1080p (2.35:1) uncut director’s cut transfer blows away the older butchered XLrator DVD from 2013. It has 4 additional minutes of gruesome gore that wasn’t available before in the states. This is the best that Inbred has looked in the United States for it’s blu ray debut. The gritty cinematography, brutal special fx, and the disturbing production design. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track on the disc. The audio is better than expected here. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the madness is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. Unfortunately, there’s no extras for this one. It’s a professionally made on demand BD-R.
