Horizon Line Blu Ray Review (Universal)
Horizon Line is a 2020 adventure thriller film directed by Mikael Marcimain (Gentlemen, Call Girl, Doktor Glas, and The Grave). It was written by Josh Campbell (10 Cloverfield Lane, 4 Minute Mile, and Notorious Nick) and Matthew Stuecken (10 Cloverfield Lane, Desert Eagle, and Ground Control). It was produced by filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra (Anna, Eden, Run All Night, The Shallows, The Commuter, Curve, Extinction, House of Wax, Orphan, Unknown, and Non-Stop). It grossed $851,279 at the box office.
Jackson (played by: Alexander Dreymon from American Horror Story, The Last Kingdom, Resistance, and Blood Ransom) and Sarah (played by: Allison Williams from A Series of Unfortunate Events, Girls, The Perfection, and The Mindy Project) hook up with each other while Sarah is on vacation but it ends up very awkward after they go their separate ways. Jackson and Sara unknowingly board together on the same local flight piloted by Sara’s friend Freddy Wyman (played by: Keith David from The Thing, They Live, Pitch Black, Requiem for a Dream, Barbershop, Platoon, Dead Presidents, Road House, 21 Bridges, Tales from the Hood 2, Spawn 2/3, and There’s Something About Mary) to go to a friend’s wedding. During the flight Wyman has a heart attack and passes away. This sends the plane into freefall. Sara and Jackson recover but the autopilot is damaged. Sara is forced to fly the plane to get them to safety. The weather is bad and Sara is struggling to keep them in the air. Will these two survive this disaster????
Horizon Line starts out slow at first and comes off as a bad romantic comedy between the two leads. When it picks up the two awkward strangers end up on the same small flight to a mutual friend’s wedding. I thought the script here was just okay and it took too long to get the main situation. Both Alexander Dreymon and Allison Williams were decent as the leads but they had no chemistry together so it made for a bizarre thriller since their relationship was supposed to carry this vague and simple concept. Veteran character actor Keith David has a small role here and he’s the best thing about this production. He was great as the pilot has some bad luck on this flight which causes all this chaos. It had a few solid and intense scenes when it came to the suspense in this but not enough to finish out the whole feature. It did have some beautiful locations and slick cinematography. Honestly, Horizon Line was just okay and it’s probably only worth a one time watch. I recommend streaming or renting it before considering a purchase.
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation and special feature from Universal Pictures! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer looks fantastic on blu ray. This one has amazing locations and some high quality cinematography to make it stand out a little more than your average thriller. The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is solid. All of the dialogue is very clean, all the suspense on the plane is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH and Spanish subtitles. The only extra on the disc is 3 “Deleted Scenes” that includes Have a Drink, It Worked, and Help Us that ends up being almost 6 minutes of unreleased footage. All of it basically filler and I am not surprised they were removed from the final cut but it’s still a nice bonus to have. It also has a slipcover and a digital code. It’s available everywhere right now!!!!
I loved the movie and even bought it on Blu-Ray + Digital. I only wished the ending wasn’t rushed because I would have loved to see a glimpse into the future of Sarah and Jackson’s relationship after they professed their love for each other right before they were rescued. I disagree with this review. The on-screen chemistry between Alexander Dreymon and Allison Williams was amazing! So, I am not surprised that they are a couple in real life and now engaged. It’s beautiful!!! I am a fan of both Allison and Alexander’s work as actors.
