Hope Gap DVD Review (Screen Media)

Hope Gap is a 2019 drama film written & directed by William Nicholson (Firelight, Lovelaw, Everyman, & See You Sunday). Nicholson is mainly known for being a screen writer. He has wrote such films as First Knight, Gladiator, Unbroken, Everest, & Les Misérables. It was produced by David M. Thompson (Billy Elliot, Edge of Darkness, The Men Who Stare at Goats, & Eastern Promises) & Sarada McDermott (Fighting with My Family, Tolkien, The Sense of an Ending, & Official Secrets). It had it’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019. It had a limited theatrical release in America & it grossed $104,732 at the box office. Teacher Edward (played by: Bill Nighy from the Underworld franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean:frachise, Shaun of the Dead, & Hot Fuzz) ends his 29 year marriage with housewife Grace (played by: Annette Bening from American Beauty, Bugsy, The Grifters, & Captain Marvel) out of no where. Their distant son Jamie (played by: Josh O’Connor from The Crown, Emma, The Program, & Peaky Blinders) is caught in the crossfire after this long relationship dies. Edward has fell in love with one the mothers of one of his students. Grace is in a deep depression & she doesn’t know what to do with her life now. Can Jamie fix their problems? or Is it too late for them????

Hope Gap is an emotional tale of a marriage coming to it’s end. It shows two people who were once in love become strangers to each other. Both Edward & Grace deal with their separation in completely different ways. Annette Bening gives one of her greatest performances as a woman with nothing left. Bill Nighy is a great as a man who decides to change his whole life no matter what to be happy again. Josh O’Connor was really good as the son who is caught in between his parents awkward situation while dealing with his own problems. Hope Gap is full of drama & it’s a very sad feature. It gets depressing to see these two just drift away & become something different after all these years. They lost their spark a long time ago but they stayed together because that’s all they knew. The script is great & it’s very honest because this happens every day in real life to couples. The acting is top notch here & there’s not a single weak link in it. It has flashbacks from when everyone was happy & it kinda breaks down what went wrong which caused all of this. People change like the weather, it’s natural & it really can’t be stopped. This is a good story & I am sure it will hit lots of people hard because they can relate to it. No one is really talking about Hope Gap but it’s one of highest quality films that’s been released on home video this year, RECOMMENDED!!!!

Let’s talk about the DVD release from Screen Media! The standard defintion (2.39:1) transfer is solid & it shows off all the amazing English locations in it. It has two different audio options which includes English: 5.1 Surround & English: 2.0 Stereo on the release. It’s not the type of feature that’s going to blow your speakers away. All of the dialogue is crystal clear & the music is elevated here. It also has English SDH subtitles. It has no extras besides “Trailers”. It also had a Blu Ray release. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
