Hell’s Kitty DVD Review (Wild Eye Releasing)
Hell’s Kitty is a 2018 horror comedy from actor, writer, creator, producer, & director Nicholas Tana (Original web series, The Director, & Sticky: A (Self) Love Story). It was adapted from the original internet show that went on from 2011 to 2015. Hell’s Kitty was mainly known for doing various parodies for classic & beloved horror films from the past. One of the coolest things about the web series was the top notch cameos from so many familiar faces from genre films & horror icons from all your favorite movies from back in the day. Tana also wrote a graphic novel based off the web-series/characters titled “Cat Scratch Fever”. The comic is now available to check out for FREE on Amazon Prime if you are curious about the other material when it comes to Hell’s Kitty universe. This has one of the best casts I’ve ever seen put together for an independent horror film. It includes: Lynn Lowry (I Drink Your Blood, The Crazies, Shivers, & Cat People), Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet, Chopping Mall, The Zero Boys, & Scream Queen Hot Tub Party), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Creepshow, Escape from New York, & Swamp Thing), Michael Berryman (The Hills have Eyes 1/2, The Devil’s Rejects, Cut and Run, & Deadly Blessing), Courtney Gains (Children of the Corn, The Burbs, Back to the Future, & Colors), John Franklin (Children of the Corn,The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, & Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return), Doug Jones (The Shape of Water, The Strain, Pan’s Labyrinth, & Hellboy 1/2) , Dale Midkiff (Pet Sematary, Nightmare Weekend, Dexter, & The Crow: Salvation), Charles Chiodo (Killer Klowns from Outer Space & Critters 1/2/3/4), Bill Oberst Jr. (3 From Hell, Circus of the Dead, Death House, & Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies), Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel 1/2, Children of the Corn: Genesis, & Strippers vs Werewolves), Ashley C. Williams (The Human Centipede, Hallows Eve, & Julia), Lee Meriwether (Batman: The Movie, Batman TV Series, & The Munsters Today TV Series), & Porn Legend Nina Hartley (Boogie Nights)! How can you NOT be excited about this Wild Eye Releasing flick?
The movie starts with a close up of a cat (Angel). After that, it shows you a bloody van & that displays a massacre from pure evil. It’s full of beautiful dead women. It’s a good set up for what’s to come in this. You are introduced to the main character Nick (Nicholas Tana), who says “I know what this looks like but it’s not my fault! It’s my cat ANGEL!”. He moved to Los Angeles to live his dream & become a Hollywood writer. He thought he was something big before in his hometown but now that he is here, he’s just a small fish in a big pond. He is desperate to find his muse for inspiration. He gets a visit from Lisa Graves (Lisa Younger), she notices his Stephen King books right away & he jokingly introduces his cat Angel as Cujo. Nick starts warning Lisa how Angel gets extremely jealous around females. His friend Adam (Adam Rucho) shows up after running into Lisa outside. Nick starts having weird dreams about his cat & the people around him. He meets up with Ms. Rommel (Nina Hartley) who he assumed was going to be a professional, someone like a lawyer due to his recent problems but he was definitely wrong about that!
Nick decides to hire a therapist Dr. Laurie Strodes (Nina Kate), mainly because he thinks she’s hot & she actually makes house calls. She breaks down his problems with his possessive kitty & she tries to help him see what Angel is doing to him with her behavior. After therapy, Nick spends some quality time with Angel to see if that helps his issues with her jealously. He has more nightmare about about his dangerous pet. Detective Pluto (Michael Berryman) shows up to Nick’s place & says he’s investigating the disappearance of someone he knows. Nick runs into his Ex’s Rosemary’s mother (Adrienne Barbeau) & finds out something happened to her. She leaves her daughter’s diary which made it clear she hated Angel & wanted to put a curse on the cat. Nick finds two priests (Doug Jones & Bill Oberst Jr.) & convinces them to perform an exorcism on Angel because he thinks she is possessed! Both men fail & Nick is back to where he started. Two religious men (Courtney Gains & John Franklin) go to Nick’s apartment & try to preach to him. Adam loans him money to hire two Mediums (Lynn Lowry & Kelli Maroney). They transfer Angel’s demon to a stuffed ram but somehow it all goes wrong! After that incident, it’s nothing but pure chaos & everything is starting all over again!!!!
The concept alone will get your attention, a jealous possessed cat won’t let anyone near it’s master & will KILL to be number one in his life. It’s basically like if Christine was a cat instead of a car & it had a more comedic vibe added to it. This evil pussy wants to be the next horror icon & it kills others just to get that spot. Lots of parodies of classic horror & references to previous work of all the known horror cameos in this. That’s the main thing that’s going to make you want to check this out especially if you are a big fan of the genre. I mentioned before that this independent film was loaded with an all horror cast but there’s much more than that. It also resurrects a few iconic characters from some fan favorites that haven’t been featured on the screen in a long time. You need to check this out just for those amazing cameos.
You have to appreciate what Nicholas Tana put together for the community with this. You can tell by watching this that he is a fan just like all of us. Those little inside jokes & nods are appreciated. Hell’s Kitty features enough gore & murder to wet the appetite for any horror fan! I appreciate a good mix of horror & comedy. I was really impressed with the dialog for this independent feature from Wild Eye Releasing. The script is full of hilarious one liners that crack you up instantly. I could see a few shirts being made with quotes from this. For example, one of my favorites was “There’s nothing worse than bloody pussy” after a vicious encounter in the movie. It had me laughing out loud several times. Hell’s Kitty is very low budget so you have consider that when it comes to the visual effects in this. I guess it adds a little charm to it since it’s a comedy. This one keeps you entertained the whole time & it has you asking “What the fuck is going to happen next”?
I checked out the digital screener for this last year for review. After comparing it to this brand new DVD release, I must say it looks & sounds much better than before! If you seen it on video on demand & I definitely recommend you to pick up this DVD from Wild Eye Releasing! The only special features on this disc are various trailers from Wild Eye Releasing which include Hell’s Kitty, Cat Sick Blues, House of Salem, Paranormal Halloween, Bonejangles, & The Jurassic Dead. Hell’s Kitty’s is available everywhere right now, check it out!!!!
