Hellboy 4K Review (Lionsgate)
Hellboy is a 2019 superhero film directed by Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers, & Tales of Halloween). It’s based on the Dark Horse Comics (The Mask, Tank Girl, Sin City, Barb Wire, Timecop, 300, 30 Days of Night, R.I.P.D., & Dr. Giggles) character of the same name. It was written by Andrew Cosby (Haunted & Eureka). It was produced by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola (Hellboy 2004, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms, & Hellboy Animated: Blood and Iron), Jeffrey Greenstein (The Expendables 4, Rambo: Last Blood, Angel Has Fallen, & The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Lawrence Gordon (Hell Boy 1/2, Watchmen, Die Hard 1/2, & Predator 1/2), & Avi Lerner (Texas Chainsaw 3D, Leatherface, The Expendables franchise, Rambo, American Ninja franchise, Amityville: The Awakening, & The Wicker Man). It was originally going to be a sequel to Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Guillermo del Toro wasn’t offered full creative control so original actor Ron Perlman refused to return without him involved. It was originally titled Rise of the Blood Queen. The budget was $50 million & it grossed $40.8 million worldwide.

The club’s seer Lady Hatton (played by: Sophie Okonedo from Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Dirty Pretty Things, After Earth, & Doctor Who) reveals Bruttenholm was meant to kill Hellboy when he came into the human world as a result of the Nazis’ Project Ragna Rok but instead raised him. Gruagach (played by: Stephen Graham from Boardwalk Empire, Rocketman, The Irishman, & Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) is advised by the witch Baba Yaga (played by: Troy James from The Flash & Emma Tate from Horrid Henry) to retrieve Nimue’s limbs, so she may grant his wish for revenge against Hellboy. Hellboy ends up in a bad situation, he is rescued by a young woman. He recognizes her as Alice Monaghan (played by: Sasha Lane from Utopia), a medium he once rescued from fairies as a baby. They are introduced to M11 agent Ben Daimio (played by: Daniel Dae Kim from Lost, Hawaii Five-0, 24, & Spider-Man 2), as Hellboy & Alice join the team and head to the club. Alice channels Hatton’s spirit, who reveals that Nimue seeks Hellboy in order to cause the apocalypse. Hellboy reveals that Gruagach is a changeling who took baby Alice’s place before Hellboy branded him with iron & forced him to return Alice, Gruagach has always hated Hellboy for taking his chance to be human. Merlin (played by: Brian Gleeson from Peaky Blinders & Logan Lucky) reveals that Hellboy is Anung un Rama, heir of Arthur through his mother. Hellboy, Alice, & Daimio face off against the evil Nimue. Who will win this deadly battle until the death????

I am not going to lie, I was beyond disappointed when they cancelled Part 3 & went with this reboot instead. It was going to be very strange without Guillermo del Toro & Ron Perlman involved in this franchise anymore. Hellboy is one of the most under-rated comic book characters of all time. I always hoped it would find a bigger audience considering how popular the superhero sub-genre is these days but it never really achieved that. When Guillermo del Toro won the Oscar & started doing bigger films, I had high hopes for this franchise again but that didn’t last long. Universal wasn’t taking the property serious so Lionsgate took over with this remake. I am a big fan of Neil Marshall so when he was added as the director, I instantly became more interested & I ended up giving it a chance when it hit theaters. This version of Hellboy took a completely different approach to the role & story. It stayed away from the superhero material & it went for more of a darker feel than before. This is one of the most brutal & visually graphic films based on a comic book that I’ve ever seen. It’s loaded with violence, death, & gore. More than most horror movies these days to be honest. The special & visual fx were top notch in this. The monsters look amazing in Hellboy. David Harbour is no Ron Perlman but he’s one of the best back up choices that you make for this iconic character. He fits the build, his voice works, & he stays true to Hellboy with his own unique spin added to it. He was much better than expected. Milla Jovovich doesn’t do as much these days so it was great to see her as the villain here. She chews the scenery & she has a blast being pure evil in Hellboy. Ian McShane steals the show like always, he has the best performance in this. Lobster Johnson is a really cool character, I wish he had more screen time in this. Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3) was perfect casting for it. The supporting cast was solid which included Daniel Dae Kim, Stephen Graham, Sasha Lane, & Kristina Klebe (Rob Zombie’s Halloween). If you go into this with a open mind, you are going to have so much fun & be entertained the whole time. If you go into it expecting the original, you might end up disappointed because it’s nothing like those other adaptations. Hopefully, this fresh start leads to more material & future sequels. RECOMMENDED!!!!
