He Dreams of Giants Blu Ray Review (Darkside Releasing)
He Dreams of Giants is a 2019 documentary film directed by Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe (Lost in La Mancha, The Bad Kids, The AMC Project, and Brothers of the Head). It’s a follow up to the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha on the same subject with a different cast. The culmination of a trilogy of a variety of documentaries that have followed visionary director Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Brazil, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, 12 Monkeys, The Fisher King, Jabberwocky, The Brothers Grimm, and Time Bandits) struggling for 25 years over his dream project. This focuses on Gilliam’s final, beleaguered quest to adapt the epic Don Quixote story. It’s a study of creative obsession. It’s been almost 30 years, Terry Gilliam has dreamed of creating the perfect screen adaptation of Cervantes’ masterpiece. The collapse of this infamous and ill-fated production over and over only further cemented Gilliam’s reputation as an idealist chasing an impossible situation. This ambitious last effort includes Adam Driver (Star Wars franchise, Marriage Story, Logan Lucky, 65, House of Gucci, Inside Llewyn Davis, This Is Where I Leave You, Silence, and The Dead Don’t Die) and Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Tomorrow Never Dies, Game of Thrones, G.I. Joe franchise, Man on Fire, Ronin, Stigmata, and Pirates of the Caribbean franchise). Will it finally happen????
He Dreams of Giants is the sequel to the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha. Terry Gilliam continues to try to adapt Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra’s Don Quixote. He’s failied at making it multiple times in the last 25 years. It’s been cursed with various issues but the film maker refuses to give up his dream production. Johnny Depp was originally attached to the previous version which apparently had double the budget as this final attempt. They joke and celebrate when Gilliam passes his original week from before on the movie still being made. The passion and dedication shown during He Dreams of Giants really makes you appreciate what hell Terry Gilliam went through to finally put this all together. He wasn’t backing down no matter what when it came to Don Quixote. It makes you wonder what all of the other adaptations would have turned out to be. This is a very fascinating, entertaining, and fun inside look into a director that’s willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. The Man Who Killed Don Quixote was finished in 2018 and it was officially released in 2019. He Dreams of Giants was way better than expected, RECOMMENDED!!!!
